Weglarz Blast Sends Aeros to 2-1 Win

Akron, OH -Akron's Nick Weglarz led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a mammoth home run to right field, lifting the Aeros to a thrilling, 2-1 victory over the Altoona Curve Saturday night before 5,160 fans at Canal Park.

It was Weglarz's team-leading sixth homer of the year, and came on a 2-2 pitch from lefty reliever Jhonathan Ramos (2-1). The drive landed behind the bleachers in right, and set off a home plate celebration as Weglarz crossed the dish.

Now with 19 RBI's on the season, Weglarz has enjoyed the current Aeros homestand, going 6-14, with a pair of homers and four RBI's.

The extra-inning heroics made a winner of Aeros righthander Loek van Mil (1-1), who tossed a pair of scoreless innings, striking out two.

The Aeros (38-20) have won five straight, nine of the last 10 overall, and 11 straight at Canal Park. The first-place Aeros also extended their lead in the EL West to 6 =C21/2 games, as second-place Harrisburg lost at Reading, 7-2.

Aeros starter T.J. House was masterful through eight innings Saturday. He threw shutout baseball for seven innings, but was reached for a run in the eighth on three singles, which tied the game at 1-1. He scattered five hits, walked two, and struck out three. At one point, House retired 15 straight Curve hitters.

After the teams remained scoreless through 6 1/2 innings, the Aeros took the lead, 1-0, in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Davis Stoneburner.

The Aeros and Curve will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. RHP Shairon Martis (4-1, 2.84) is the scheduled starter for the Curve, while LHP Giovanni Soto (5-2, 4.22) will start for Akron. It will be a Family FUN-day, with all kids allowed to play pre-game catch on the field, and run the bases after the game.
