Games #59 - Saturday, June 9, 2012

Waterfront Park - Trenton, NJ - 7:05 PM

LAST GAME: The B-Mets matched a season-high with 15 hits, including five from Matt den Dekker, and held off a late rally to defeat the Trenton Thunder 9-7 last night at Waterfront Park. Jefry Marte gave the B-Mets the lead in the first with a three-run homer off starter Adam Miller. After the Thunder plated single runs in the second and fifth to cut the lead to one, Binghamton came back with a four-run seventh inning. Den Dekker supplied an RBI double, Eric Campbell drove in two with a single and Juan Lagarescapped the scoring with an RBI single. B-Mets starter Gonzalez Germen exited after allowing just two runs over seven innings of work. Reliever Ryan Fraser made his Double-A debut in the eighth and allowed four runs on three hits while recording two outs. Robert Carson got an out to cap the inning and returned for the ninth. The lefty allowed one run on a pair of hits, but retired the final three he faced to earn his third save. Germen racked up his second win as a B-Met.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Darin Gorski (3-3, 4.59) makes his eleventh appearance and tenth start of the season. The lefty comes off a win over the Akron Aeros in his last start on June 2. It was his first victory since April 19. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out three over 6.1 innings of work, his longest outing as a B-Met. Gorski has held left-handed hitters to a .194 batting and has only allowed a total of three runs in the first, second and third innings this year (27.0 IP). Gorski was selected in the 7th round of the 2009 draft.

LHP Shaeffer Hall (5-5, 3.93) makes his team-leading 13th start of the season and second against the B-Mets. Hall earned the win in his last start against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on June 4. He surrendered a season-high seven runs (six earned) on ten hits, but got 10 runs of support from the Trenton offense in the victory. The lefty struck out four over six innings of work. Hall tossed 6.2 shutout innings against the B-Mets on May 15 to collect the victory at NYSEG Stadium. Selected in the 25th round of the 2009 draft out of the University of Kansas, Hall is in his fourth year of pro ball and second with the Thunder.

FIVE-HIT FRATERNITY: B-Mets centerfield Matt den Dekker went 5-for-5 last night with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored. The last B-Met to collect five hits in one game was Juan Lagares when he went 5-for-5 against the Reading Phillies on July 24, 2011. It was the second time den Dekker has had a five-hit game in his pro career, having performed the feat as a Savannah Sand Gnat (Low-A) on August 24, 2010.

CLIMBING THE LEAGUE LADDER: Matt den Dekker has gone 13-for-18 with three doubles and a triple in the first four games of the roadtrip. He has raised his batting average 33 percentage points over that span to .336, the second-best average in the league behind Juan Carlos Linares of Portland (.345).

FIRST INNING OFFENSE: The B-Mets have scored at least one run in the first inning in each of their first four games on the roadtrip. Third baseman Jefry Marte has contributed with a run-scoring extra base hit in the first in each of the last four games.

OFFENSE KEEPS ROLLING: Binghamton matched a season-high with 15 hits last night against the Thunder. They have done that three times this season and twice against Trenton. After being held to one hit last Friday night against the Akron Aeros, the B-Mets have collected 10 hits or more in each of their last five games (excluding Sunday's suspended game versus the Aeros).

PUT THREE TOGETHER: The B-Mets are looking to compile just their second three-game winning of the season. They won four straight games against the Portland Sea Dogs from April 19 to 22. A win tonight would get Binghamton back to .500 for the first time since they were 22-22 on May 23.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets complete their only series in Trenton tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP Greg Peavey toes the rubber for Binghamton against RHP Brett Marshall.
