Weekly: Gladiators Keep Rolling; Face Stingrays and Solar Bears This Week

DULUTH, Ga. - Winners of five of their last seven, the Gladiators will look to continue their winning ways in a quiet week before an extended roadtrip next week. Gwinnett will travel to South Carolina to take on the Stingrays on Tuesday for the 12th time this season out of 15 matchups. The Solar Bears will arrive at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday for a short two game stand on successive nights, the last two home games for the Gladiators until January 20th .

Scouting the Opponents:

- South Carolina's leading scorer, Peter Boyd (12g/15a/27p), has also been leading the way for the Stingrays against the Gladiators this season. One of only four Rays to play in all 11 games against Gwinnett so far, Boyd has four goals, six assists, and 12 penalty minutes against the team. Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis has also been lights out against his former team, holding a 5-1 record with a 2.0 GAA and a .925 SV% versus Gwinnett.

- Recent acquisition Mickey Lang figures to help the Orlando Solar Bears as he already had top ten statistics while with Fort Wayne earlier this season. Before being traded for David Rutherford on December 30th, Lang had 17 goals and nine assists in 24 games with the Komets. Since coming to Orlando, Lang has added three goals and three assists in only four games.

1/11: Try Hockey Day / $5 Frenzy

- The Gwinnett Gladiators, in conjunction the Duluth Ice Forum, will host a "Try Hockey Day" at the Arena at Gwinnett Center from 11:30-2:00 P.M. for boys and girls ages 4-9 who have never participated in organized hockey.

- In an effort to give the fans MORE of what they wanted, and less of standing in line, the Gladiators created their $5 Frenzy Night. A premium team merchandise item is selected for the night andavailable at special tables throughout the arena for only $5. For the January 11th game, fleece blankets will be part of the $5 Frenzy promotion.

Tuesday, December 31: Gwinnett 0, @ Evansville 6 - L

Garrett Bartus pitched a 42 save shutout, as Evansville topped Gwinnett, 6-0, on a New Year's Eve. Daulton Leveille paced the IceMen with a goal and three assists, while Peter Sakaris had two goals, including the game winner.

Thursday, January 2: South Carolina 4, @ Gwinnett 1 - L

Returning home for an early matinee game, the Gladiators were stumped by the Stingrays, 4-1. Wayne Simpson led the way for the Stingrays, tallying a goal and two assists, while Bobby Hughes scored his first goal in a Gwinnett sweater.

Friday, January 3: Gwinnett 4, @ South Carolina 0 - W

Brad Phillips made 39 saves for his first pro shutout, as the Gladiators trounced the top team in the ECHL, 4-0, at North Charleston Coliseum. Evan Bloodoff scored twice, with reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Month Jeff Jakaitis suffering his first regulation loss in 13 starts.

Saturday, January 4: Florida 1, @ Gwinnett 8 - W

The Gladiators scored early and often at the Arena at Gwinnett Center, stymying the Everblades, 8-1. It was a season-high in goals for a Gwinnett team that has now won five of its last seven games. 11 of the 15 skaters for Gwinnett registered at least a point, and seven had multiple point nights. Josh Currie scored two goals and added an assist, while Dirk Southern had a goal and three assists. Paul Karpowich was stout between the pipes for Gwinnett, stopping 36 of 37 shots, while Lightning first round pick Riku Helenius gave up all eight goals on 37 shots.

Glads Notes:

Wearing Out the Goal Lamp: In the last two games, the Gladiators have scored 12 goals, while holding two of the top three teams in the East, the Stingrays and Everblades, to a total of one ... Saturday's 8-1 win over Florida matched a season high in goals for the team as they got their eight on 37 shots ... In the last two games, 12 of Gwinnett's 15 skaters have registered at least a point, and seven recorded multiple points ... Josh Currie, Dirk Southern, and Evan Bloodoff all have back-to-back multiple point nights.

These Guys Are Good: Since Louis Domingue was called up to Portland and Peter Delmas went down with aninjury, Brad Phillips and Paul Karpowich have stepped up big time in net. In four games, Karpowich has two wins, a 2.25 goals against average, and a .927 save percentage, while Phillips holds three wins in five games with a 2.61 GAA and a .917 SV% ... Phillips picked up his first career shutout on Friday, holding the league's best team, South Carolina, scoreless on 39 shots faced ... Despite the offensive overload on Saturday, Karpowich actually picked up the first star by stopping 36 of 37 shots, including several from close range.

Super Special Teams: Opponents have yet to score on the power play against the Gladiators in 2014 as Gwinnett has killed off 14 straight opposing power plays over the past three games. Gwinnett ranks 5th in the ECHL, killing off 87.2% of opposing power plays. On the man advantage, Gwinnett has at least one power play tally in ten of the last 13games, going 10-for-38 (26.3%) over that stretch.

Streaking Glads: Evan Bloodoff has eight points (6 goals, 2 assists) in the past nine games ... Forward Bobby Hughes has a goal and five assists over his last seven games, and has a three-game point streak ... Josh Currie has at least a point in six of his last eight games (4 G, 5 A).

Staying Disciplined: Gwinnett is the third-least penalized team in the ECHL, averaging just 12.06 penalty minutes per game. Only the Elmira Jackals (10.63) and Cincinnati Cyclones (11.74) average fewer penalty minutes.

Milestones: Brad Phillips posted his first professional shutout Friday night in a 4-0 win over South Carolina ... Justin Weller played in his 85th as a pro and as a Gladiator on Tuesday ... Bobby Hughes played his 100th ECHL game on Friday... Rob Kwiet hit 275 as a pro on Thursday ... Joey Haddad is two games away from 200 in the ECHL.

Snippets: When scoring three or more goals the Gladiators are 12-3-0-1 ... Gwinnett is 9-0 when leading after two periods.
