Previewing the Upcoming Week:

1/10 & 1/11 vs. Reading - 7:05 p.m., & 1/12 at Reading - 4:05 p.m., Home vs. REA 0-2-0, Away vs. REA 2-1-1

The Elmira Jackals and Reading Royals are already plenty familiar with each other thanks to six prior meetings (out of 17) this season. Adding a higher degree of familiarity (and possibly contempt) is the fact that four current Royals skaters have suited up for Elmira at some point during their pro career, including two that played for the Jackals this season. Reading has won each of its first two visits to First Arena by a combined score of 9-3 while the Jackals have picked up five of a possible eight standings points in their first four trips to Santander Arena. The Jackals enter play this week seven points behind Reading for ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings, but the Royals hold two games in hand over the Jackals and will make up one of them Wednesday at home against Wheeling.

Recapping Last Week:

12/31 at S. Carolina: L 0-2

Elmira succumbed to the ECHL's top goalie, and defense, on New Year's Eve in South Carolina. Despite a 38-30 shot advantage over the Stingrays, the Jackals could not put a goal on the board and suffered just their second New Year's Eve loss in six tries since joining the ECHL.

1/3 at Wheeling: OTL 2-3

The Jackals roster lost a pair of players (Ludwig Karlsson and Nick Tuzzolino) prior to last Friday's game and, despite defenseman Steve Brown joining the club from Danbury of the Federal Hockey League, the Jackals played the game a man short. They put up a valiant effort against the Nailers and the adversity to earn a standings point for making it to overtime. Wheeling defenseman Myles Harvey potted the OT winner with Wheeling on a power play.

1/4 vs. Wheeling: OTW 4-3

In their first home game of 2014 the Jackals thrilled their fans with a 4-3 overtime win. Rookie Jakub Culek scored the winner early in the sudden-death frame and notched his first professional game winner. Andrew Harrison, called up that day from Watertown of the FHL, notched his first ECHL goal late in the first to tie the game after Wheeling grabbed an early lead. Matt Carter and Jordan Pietrus also scored to give the Jackals a lead as big as 3-1.

Quick Hits:

* The Jackals face the Royals for a three-in-three this weekend that will kick off a busy portion of their schedule. From January 10 until the end of the month the Jackals will play 11 games in 22 days, including two three-in-threes. The Jackals will benefit from six of those 11 games coming on First Arena ice. Two of the road games are in Reading where the Jackals are 2-1-1 this season.

* Jackals captain Jean Bourbeau netted his fourth multi-assist game of the season on Saturday with two helpers in Elmira's 4-3 OTW. He has achieved that feat in just 30 games this year and, by comparison, he had one multi-assist game in 113 games for Elmira over the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. Bourbeau has 11 helpers in 30 games and is on pace for a career-best 26.

* Elmira went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill last Saturday against Wheeling and improved it's home penalty kill to 92.9 percent which is second in the league and first in the Eastern Conference. Utah leads the league at home at 93.2 percent. The Jackals are 30-for-30 on the penalty kill in their last nine home games and are 5-4-0 over that time. The Jackals have afforded opponents the fewest power play chances at home (42) of any team in the league and their three power play goals allowed are also the fewest.

* Jackals newcomers Andrew Harrison and Steve Brown made solid first impressions in their home debuts last Saturday. Harrison scored his first ECHL goal on his first shot at 16:16 of the first period and tied the game at one. In the second period Brown assisted on Matt Carter's go-ahead goal for his first ECHL point and then dropped the gloves with Wheeling's Patrick McGrath. Harrison and Brown are the first FHL call-ups to suit up for the Jackals this year following a 2012-13 campaign which saw Elmira use four.
