Huntsville Havoc News Release
HUNTSVILLE - The Huntsville Havoc (4-2-1) will play a two-game series against the Birmingham Bulls (6-0-0) this weekend. The Havoc will host the Bulls on Friday, Nov. 16 for a tough rematch against the undefeated team before heading to Birmingham on Saturday, Nov. 17 for their second game of the weekend.
Week Recap
The Havoc faced a difficult schedule this past weekend and played three consecutive games, coming out with a win and a pair of losses.
Friday Night Home Opener - On Friday, the Havoc played their first home game of the season against the Pensacola Ice Flyers, which ended in an exciting overtime win. The Havoc had a rough start but slowly gained momentum as the game progressed. The Ice Flyers scored a goal only six seconds into of the game but the Havoc struck back late in the period. Rookie Pat Condon scored his first goal of the season to which ended the first period in a 1-1 tie.
In the second period, the Ice Flyers took the lead with the only goal of the period and held it until late in the third period. The third period saw a battle between the two teams and the Havoc's relentless effort paid off. As the time ticked on the game clock, the Havoc pulled the goalkeeper in exchange for an extra attacker with only minutes left in the third period. In a frenzy of suspense and excitement, Derek Perl came through for the Havoc and scored a goal to tie the game with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time.
The tie sent the two teams into overtime and the arena was buzzing with energy. Two minutes into overtime, Kyle Sharkey found the puck and passed it down to Tyler Piacentini, who was waiting at the blue line to receive it. Piacentini then had a one-on-one breakaway with the goalie and shot the puck into the back of Ice Flyers net to lead the Havoc to victory.
Saturday Road Trip to Pensacola - After a home win against the Ice Flyers on Friday night, the Havoc loaded up the bus to head down to Pensacola to face the Ice Flyers yet again on Saturday evening.
The Ice Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the first period and held the Havoc to a scoreless first period. When the Havoc came back from intermission, the team took advantage of the fresh and a power play. Stephen Hrehoriak put one on the board only 51 seconds into the second period. The Ice Flyers responded with a goal of their own, making the score 3-1 Ice Flyers. Later in period, Hrehoriak scored his second goal of the game, closing out the second period 3-2.
In the third period, Hunter Stewart came through for the Havoc and scored his first goal on the season and tied up the score 3-3, which sent the game into overtime. Unfortunately, Tyler Piacentini was called for tripping in the extra frame and the Ice Flyers slipped one past Havoc goalkeeper Max Milosek to end the game.
Sunday Veterans Game - Sunday was the Havoc's third straight game of the weekend and faced their toughest opponent yet, the leaders of the SPHL standings, Macon Mayhem, and the Havoc unfortunately saw their first home loss of the season.
Because of a slow start from the Havoc, the first period saw only one goal from the away-team. The Mayhem picked up a goal on the power play in the first and then scored another quick goal three minutes into the second period, out scoring the Havoc 2-0.
Later in the second, the Havoc banded together and cut their opponent's lead in half with a power play goal from Christian Powers. The period ended with Macon once again outshooting the home team 10-6.
In the third, Macon once again took a two-goal lead at 9:15 into the third. But with eight minutes left the period, Ryan Salkeld scored on an assist from Alec Brandrup. As the period was nearing its end, the Havoc was awarded a power play and also pulled the goalie for one extra attacker. The game ended with an intense flurry of shots but unfortunately, the Havoc could not seal the deal and the game ended with Macon outscoring the Havoc 3-2.
Vs. Birmingham
The Havoc haven't seen the Birmingham Bulls since their first game of the season last month. The Havoc lost their season opener 5-4 in an away game versus the Bulls. The Bulls had a strong offense and outshot the Havoc 36-28 on Oct. 19. The Bulls (6-0-0) have yet to lose a game and the Havoc are looking for a rematch and to give them their first loss of the season.
