Evansville, IN - The Peoria Rivermen netted four goals in the second period and Stephen Klein earned his first pro shutout in net Friday as the Rivermen beat the Evansville Thunderbolts 4-0 at the Ford Center Friday. With the win, the Rivermen improve to 6-0-2 on the season before tomorrow night's rematch with the Thunderbolts in Evansville.
Peoria opened the scoring with Austin Vieth's snap over the shoulder of Evansville netminder Edwin Minney 1:59 into the second period. The Peoria lead doubled at 7:16 of the frame when Rivermen center Will Smith finished a 2-on-1 rush with teammate Ben Blasko.
The Rivermen redoubled their lead in the second half of the second period, with captain Alec Hagaman and defenseman Ralfs Grinbergs each finished feeds from Joseph Widmar at 13:54 and 16:40 of the second period, respectively, to put the Rivermen up 4-0 after two frames.
Klein turned aside all 35 shots that came his way to earn the clean slate in net, including 28 Thunderbolts shots in the first two period, as he improved to 4-0-0 on the season. The Sasktatoon, Saskatchewan native also set new career highs for saves and shots faced in a single game.
Notes: Widmar logged a pair of assists for his second multi-assist outing of the season and giving him a point or more in each of his five games played this season...Grinbergs' goal is his first since April 6 of last season against Huntsville as a member of the Mississippi RiverKings...Hagaman netted a goal and an assist for his third straight multi-point outing and fifth straight contest with a point or more...The Rivermen return to action tomorrow night in Evansville for a rematch with the Thunderbolts at the Ford Center...Saturday's game will start at 7:15 PM, and the broadcast of the game can be heard, starting with the pregame show, at 6:55, at http://mixlr.com/peoria-rivermen/
