LOUISVILLE, KY. -- After receiving relatively late notice of his pending start on Friday, Pawtucket right-hander Allen Webster was given an early exit from his outing.

But before being ejected by home plate umpire Jeff Gosney, the talented PawSox right hander pitched well enough and long enough to earn his fourth victory, defeating Louisville by a 4-3 final before 8.761 at Louisville Slugger Field.

Originally scheduled to appear on Saturday, Webster took the mound in place of Alfredo Aceves, who was recalled to Boston earlier in the day.

Webster retired six straight and eight of the last nine before facing Mike Hessman with the bases empty and two out in the bottom of the sixth. After his first pitch struck Hessman in the upper left leg, both Webster and manager Gary DiSarcina were thrown out by Gosney, whose reaction followed a pair of flare ups in the top of the inning.

Webster's counterpart Armando Galarraga had struck Pawtucket shortstop Brock Holt with a 3-1 pitch, also with two away. As Holt reached first base, Galarraga shouted at him, prompting the PawSox to empty their dugout and bullpen bench. The Bats did the same. There was no physical contact and play resumed.

But as the inning ended, Galarraga again engaged Holt in verbal sparring, causing players from both sides to spill back onto the field. Again order was maintained. No punches were thrown, nor were any shoves exchanged.

By then, the PawSox had frustrated Galarraga by rallying from an early deficit, while Webster settled into a groove following a shaky start.

After Louisville leadoff batter Billy Hamilton, the International League's top base stealer, walked in the first inning, he took second on a balk, stole third base and scored on a groundout by Henry Rodriguez.

Two innings later, Pawtucket capitalized when Galarraga (L, 2-3) walked the bases loaded. Batting with two-out, Brandon Snyder lined a 2-1 pitch to left field to drive in Jackie Bradley Jr. and Justin Henry for a 2-1 lead.

Jeremy Hazelbaker opened the fourth inning with a single, swiped second and third and came home on Holt's RBI single. Holt immediately stole second and advanced another 90 feet on an errant throw, before scoring on Bradley's infield single.

The Bats' Dennis Phipps got one of those runs back off Webster's first pitch in the next half inning. He lined his fourth home run to straight-away left field to cut the PawSox lead to 4-2. However, Webster (W, 4-0) recovered well, allowing just one base runner the next 2 2/3 innings, before his ejection.

Right hander Chris Martin inherited Hessman and after surrendering an infield single, ended the threat by inducing a fly out. Martin fanned four of the next seven Bats, preserving the two-run lead through the eighth. He has now authored 28 1/3 scoreless innings for Double-A Portland and Pawtucket this year.

Anthony Carter (S, 7) survived the bottom of the ninth for the save. He allowed a leadoff walk of Emmanuel Burriss and RBI double by Josh Fellhauer, but stranded the tying tally at third base with a game-ending strikeout.

After splitting the first two games of the series, the PawSox and Bats are scheduled to continue the set at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday. Steven Wright (2-2, 4.26) is slated to start for Pawtucket, opposite Greg Reynolds (4-0, 2.88).
