¨The Wings won just their 4th series opener of the season and first since May 2 at Columbus (4-10 in series openers)

HERNANDEZ STARTS: Fridayfs scheduled starter, P.J. Walters, has been summoned to Minnesota therefore LHP Pedro Hernandez will make his first start of the year for Rochester tonight. Hernandez was on the Wings Opening Day roster but was recalled to Minnesota before ever throwing a pitch. With the Twins, the 24-year-old went 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA (21 ER/32.1 IP) before being optioned back to Rochester on 5/20... In 4 starts with the Wings at the end of last year - after coming over from the White Sox in the Francisco Liriano trade - Hernandez went 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA (10 ER/17.1 IP)... Hernandez made 3 appearances (2 GS) with the Knights last year where he picked up his first and thus far only IL win vs BUF on 7/23/12.

¨Hernandezfs last start was Sunday when he allowed 3 runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings against Boston.

PROVIDING RELIEF: The newest member of the Red Wings bullpen, LHP Aaron Thompson, tossed 3 perfect innings behind starter Andrew Albers to earn his first career Triple-A save. In 2 games with the Wings so far since being promoted from New Britian on Saturday, Thompson has allowed just one hit in 5 scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts and no walks... Thompson, a 2005 1st round pick of the Marlins, has not allowed a run in his last 17.1-innings between New Britain and Rochester... In all he has allowed just 1 run in 19.2 innings this season and has converted all 4 of his save opportunities.

¨Before Thurs., the bullpen hadnft pitched a scoreless game since 5/4 @ COL when Thielbar and Perdomo combined to toss 3 scoreless IP

SLAMA ACTIVATED: Long-time Red Wings veteran reliever RHP Anthony Slama was reinstated from the Red Wings disabled list on Friday. Slama missed 29 games after going on the disabled list April 23 with a lower back strain. Prior to hitting the DL, Slama was 0-4 with an 18.47 ERA (13 ER/6.1 IP)... In his last outing on 4/22 vs PAW, Slama allowed a tied for career high 5 runs... Prior to this season, the 29-year-old had a 1.99 career MiLB ERA with 100 saves in 254 games.

VS. THE KNIGHTS: The Red Wings have now won 8 of their last 12 games against the Knights dating back to 2011 -- including a 6-2 mark at Frontier Field. Prior to this good stretch of play against Charlotte, Rochester had lost 12 of 13 against the Knights dating back to the beginning of the 2010 season. Last yearfs 5-3 series win was the first season series win for the Wings over Charlotte since 2009. Over the last 10 years (since 2003), Rochester now holds a slight 41-40 edge over the Knights with the Wings owning a 24-16 advantage at home.

¨Tonightfs CHA starter Zach Stewart has faced the Wings just once in his career... N/d, 6 ip, r, 5 h on July 2, 2012 w/ PAW

MAJOR HOLE TO FILL: With Chris Colabellofs departure to Minnesota, the heart of the Wings order will be without their top threat. At the time of his promotion, Colabello accounted for 30% of the Red Wings home runs this season (12 of 40), 23% of the RBI (39 of 171), 25% of the teamfs XBH (29 of 116) and 16% of the teamfs hits (63 of 176).

PROVIDING THE OFFENSE: The Wings will rely on a couple recent additions to the lineup to fill the void left by Colabello... OF Clete Thomas returned to Rochesterfs lineup last night after missing 14 games with a quad injury... Before getting hurt, Thomas was hitting .346 with 6 HR and 17 RBI in 25 games. He went 0-for-4 last night... INF Deibinson Romero made his Triple-A debut last night (0-for-4; k). He hit 19 HR and 78 RBI last season at NBR and in 8 G with the Rock Cats this season, Romero was batting .355 with 3 HR and 6 RBI... Last nightfs 3-4-5 hitters went 0-12; while the 7-8-9 guys went 6-9 w/ 2R & 2 RBI.
