Late Fight Not Enough in 9-4 Loss

Moosic, Pa. - The woes of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) continued on Friday night as the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays) defeated SWB, 9-4. The RailRiders trailed by six after three and a half innings of play, and have now lost 11 of their last 12 games.

The RailRiders faced anther early deficit after Durham scored two runs in the third. Juan Apodaca led off with an infield single, and came around to score one out later when Brandon Guyer doubled to left field. Guyer was advanced home when Wil Myers sent a double to deep center field.

The Bulls put together another big inning against SWB, as they plated four in the fourth. Shelley Duncan led off with a walk, and moved to third when Mike Fontenot followed with a single. Tim Beckham then singled up the middle to drive home Duncan, and move Fontenot to third. After Apodaca was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jason Bourgeois drew a walk to advance home Fontenot. Guyer then reached on a fielder's choice that plated Beckham, and Apodaca came around to score when Vince Belnome grounded out to second base. Durham led 6-0 after three and a half innings of play.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pulled two runs back in the fifth. Melky Mesa led off with a single up the middle. One out later, Bobby Wilson hit a deep fly ball to left field, but it went off the tip of the glove of Guyer, allowing Wilson to reach at second base and advancing Mesa to third. Corban Joseph then singled through the right side to score Mesa, and Wilson came around to score when Brennan Boesch reached on a fielder's choice.

Durham scored two more runs in the seventh. Myers led off by reaching on an error by Joseph, and two outs later advanced to second on Fontenot's walk. After a double steal by Myers and Fontenot, Beckham walked to load the bases. Apodaca then singled to center field, which plated both Myers and Fontenot.

The Bulls capped their scoring with a run in the eighth. Guyer reached on an infield single, advanced to third on Belnome's single to right, and scored when Myers hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Following a walk to Alberto Gonzalez and a single by Joseph, Zoilo Almonte hit a triple in the ninth to cut the lead to 9-4, but SWB could not inch any closer. The loss dropped Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to 21-25 on the season.

Graham Stoneburner (2-3) picked up the loss for the RailRiders after conceding six runs over three and one-third innings of work.

Alex Colome (4-5) allowed two unearned runs in his five innings, but scattered five hits and issued just two walks to earn the win for Durham.

The best the RailRiders can hope for is a split with Durham, and they'll play game three of the four game set with Durham Saturday evening. First pitch at PNC Field is 7:05 p.m., with gates opening at six. The first 1,500 fans (18 & over) will receive a free BBQ grill set courtesy of Blue Cross of NEPA. Star Wars night will also be celebrated at the ballpark, and fans can take pictures with their favorite characters from the movies. Caleb Cotham (0-2, 9.00) will get the start for SWB, while Durham will counter with J.D. Martin (5-2, 3.48).
