Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
HOMERED AT HOME: A pair of homers helped the visiting Durham Bulls burst out to an 8-0 lead. A ninth-inning downpour then cut short a would-be rally as the RailRiders, with the tying run on deck, saw their series opener stopped early after a 38-minute delay for an 8-5 final.
DOWNWARD SPIRAL: The RailRiders have lost a season-high five in a row for the second time this season. Both skids have come in a compressed span of time as Dave Miley's team lost for the 10th time in 11 games last night.
DEEP SIXED: A loss tonight would make for SWB's longest losing streak since dropping six in a row from June 18-23, 2012. That included a four-game sweep at Louisville and a pair of losses at Indianapolis. That was the longest losing streak for the eventual IL North champs who spent the entire season living a nomadic existence without a home ballpark. The franchise has not suffered seven straight setbacks since enduring nine consecutive losses from Aug. 9-19, 2011. That included three losses to Gwinnett, a two-game sweep at Syracuse and a four-game broom cleaning at the hands of this Durham squad in Moosic.
MARSHALL, MARSHALL, MARSHALL!: The RailRiders have not had their starter post a win since Brett Marshall got the victory against Indianapolis on May 7. He was a late scratch on May 12 to be bullpen insurance for the Yankees' doubleheader at Cleveland the next day. He was not used then, but on May 15 he made his Major League debut with 5.2 innings of relief against the Mariners. Last night, in his first outing since tasting the top level, Marshall was tagged with eight runs on eight hits in four frames. The eight runs allowed tie for the most scores against a RailRider in a single outing. In his five home starts, Marshall is 1-3 with a 7.13 ERA and four home runs allowed over 24 IP. On two road nods, he is 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA and no homers.
ROLLERCOASTER RIDE: After its May 11 4-3 defeat of Gwinnett, the RailRiders' pitching staff owned a 2.98 ERA. The team was also a season-high-tying six games over .500. In losing 10 of 11 since, the staff has allowed 72 earned runs in 94.2 IP (6.85 ERA) while allowing 15 balls to leave the yard. Starters have gone 0-5 in that time while giving up 38 earned runs in 48.1 IP (7.08 ERA) and allowing 10 of the home runs. The bullpen has gone 1-5 with 34 earned runs surrendered in 46.1 IP (6.60 ERA) and five taters. SWB spent most of the early stage of the season among the IL's best in team ERA, often ranking just behind Indianapolis. It enters tonight with a 3.94 mark that places it eighth in the 14-team circuit.
99 PROBLEMS, BUT NEAL AIN'T ONE: Thomas Neal went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk last night. With 99 at-bats on the year, Neal boasts a triple slash of .333/.427/.414 and an OPS of .841. He is third on the team in doubles (8) and RBIs (18), even though he has only played in 29 games due to time on the DL. Neal rises to the moment in pressure situations as well. With men on base his average jumps to .339. With men on and two outs, it is .346. And with men in scoring position and two outs, he is hitting .368.
GETTING DEFENSIVE: Entering tonight, SWB leads the loop in team fielding percentage (.985) with a league-low 24 errors. The second-best marks in each category belong to Rochester at .981 and 33. The RailRiders also boast the IL's best caught stealing efficiency, cutting down would-be base stealers at a .396 rate. Not only does SWB lead the league in efficiency, it also stands alone with a league-high 21 men nabbed in 53 attempts.
