Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky - After last night's ten run outburst, Louisville's offense would try to pick up where they left off. However, they only managed three runs which weren't quite enough to overcome Pawtucket (28-20), as the Bats (24-24) fell 4-3.

After a perfect first inning for Armando Galarraga (L, 2-3), Billy Hamilton led off the bottom half with a walk. Continuing his tumultuous pace on the bases, he drew a balk from Red Sox pitcher Allen Webster (W, 4-0) and stole third with ease. The stolen base was his league-leading 25th on the season. Henry Rodriguez fouled off several pitches before grounding out to the right side of the infield, driving in Hamilton.

Pawtucket took the lead in the third inning, as Galarraga got himself into trouble with the walk. He walked three in the inning, and two came around to score on a single by Brandon Snyder, giving the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth inning the Red Sox got their running game going. Team stolen base leader Jeremy Hazelbaker stole second and third on back to back pitches, his 13th and 14th on the season, and scored on a single by Brock Holt. Holt then stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw by Corky Miller. Holt would score on a single by Jackie Bradley Jr. pushing the Pawtucket margin to 4-1.

The Bats got one back in the bottom of the fourth on a line drive home run by Denis Phipps, his fourth of the season.

On a night with postgame fireworks, the fireworks very nearly got started early when Armando Galarraga hit Holt with a pitch. After a pitch that was well inside, the next pitch hit him on the hip. The benches cleared with the teams standing off at the first base line. Both teams were warned, but no players were ejected. That wouldn't last for long. In the bottom of the sixth, Webster hit Mike Hessman with a pitch and was thrown out of the game along with the Red Sox manager.

Galarraga left after six innings of work, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks and a hit batter, striking out three. Galarraga was relieved by Curtis Partch, who pitched well out of the bullpen giving up just one hit in two innings.

The Red Sox looked to get some insurance in the top of the ninth as Kevin Whelan entered for the Bats, and looked to be in good shape after a leadoff walk was followed by a double, putting runners at second and third. But Whelan recovered well, getting a harmless groundout followed by two strikeouts to escape the inning.

The bottom of the ninth saw the Bats facing hard-throwing righty Anthony Carter (S, 7), who would try and close it out for Pawtucket. Emmanuel Burriss led off the inning with a single and stolen base, and would score on a one-out double down the right field line by Josh Fellhauer. Fellhauer represented the tying run, but would not make it home as Carter retired Hamilton and Rodriguez to save it for the Red Sox.

Felix Perez's impressive 24-game on base streak ended today, as he went 0-for-4.

Tomorrow night's first pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm; Louisville's RHP Greg Reynolds (4-0, 2.88) is set to face Pawtucket's RHP Steven Wright (2-2, 4.26). The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a free red, white and blue Bats' hat. Fans age 21 or older can enjoy $3 "craft beer" at all Saturday home games this season on the Overlook Deck. Birdzerk will also be making an appearance!
