Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Corpus Christi Hooks bused 890 miles overnight and for most of the day Tuesday from Springfield, Missouri.
They arrived at Whataburger Field just before 2 in the afternoon for a 7:05 appointment with the Texas League South Division-leading Midland RockHounds.
Chris Carter finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three runs as Midland topped the weary Hooks 11-6 before 5,170.
Midland is 34-23 in the second half of Texas League play. The Hooks fell to 25-32 and have dropped four straight. The RockHounds' magic number to eliminate Corpus Christi from playoff consideration is five.
The visitors from West Texas benefited from 10 walks and four Hooks errors.
Midland wasted little time jumping on Hooks starter Kenny Baugh. Josh Horton drew a one-out walk and Carter launched a laser-shot to left, his league-leading 24th home run.
Corey Brown's lead-off walk and a Baugh throwing error on Jemile Week's sacrifice attempt set the stage for a two-run Midland second. Raul Padron stroked an RBI single to left and the fourth RockHound run came across when Corey Wimberly bounced into a double play.
Two innings later, Wimberly's RBI triple over the head of left fielder Collin DeLome provided Midland with a 5-0 advantage. Weeks' sacrifice fly in the fifth - Baugh's final frame - made it 6-0. Reliever T.J. Burton came on for the sixth and surrendered three runs, plus two more in the seventh.
Baugh (4-3) allowed four earned runs on six hits and six walks. He fanned four.
RockHounds starter Arnold Leon (2-1) scattered three hits in five shutout innings to go with three walks and three strikeouts. He threw 75 pitches, 44 for strikes.
Down 11-0, Felix Molina put Corpus Christi's first score on the board with a two-run bomb into the right-field bullpen during the seventh. Jason Castro and Jimmy Van Ostrand added run-scoring singles. Drew Locke, who finished 3-for-4, had a ninth-inning RBI double, as did Castro. Locke tops the TL with 107 runs batted in.
Sergio Perez (10-10) takes the ball for Corpus Christi Wednesday at 7:05 against Travis Banwart (9-5). The first 2,500 fans receive a Houston Colt .45s cap, courtesy of Flint Hills Resources.
