Drillers Lose, Maintain Lead
August 25, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers lost a game Tuesday night, but they did not lose any of their lead in the Texas League standings. In the first game of a four-game homestand, the Arkansas Travelers blanked Tulsa 6-0. Despite the setback, the first-place Drillers maintained their two-game lead atop the North Division because second-place Northwest Arkansas dropped its seventh straight game in a loss to Springfield.
The Drillers were limited to only three hits by a trio of Arkansas pitchers in the loss.
The Travs broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. After Mark Trumbo singled, he moved to third on a single by Hank Conger. When Brian Walker singled to right, Trumbo scored and Conger went to second. Ivan Contreras walked to load the bases before Peter Bourjos singled home Conger and Walker for the 3-0 lead.
Arkansas increased its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth after Trumbo singled and scored on Hank Conger's double to center.
The Travs added a fifth run in the seventh. Nate Sutton singled before going to second on an errant pickoff throw from Drillers' reliever Alberto Alburquerque. Sutton then took third when Trumbo flied out to center before scoring on a ground out by Conger.
The Travelers closed the scoring in the ninth as Trumbo walked and scored on a base hit by Ryan Mount.
Arkansas starting pitcher Alexander Torres limited the Drillers to only two hits in six innings as he improved his record to 3-1 with the victory. The lefthander walked three and struck out eight.
Chaz Roe suffered the loss for Tulsa. It was his first loss in his last six starts and dropped his record to 7-3. He gave up 4 runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts.
The Drillers will play game two of their four-game series with the Travs Wednesday evening. Tulsa's Ching-Lung Lo (0-1, 5.87 ERA) will take the mound against Tim Kiely (4-2, 5.03 ERA) of Arkansas with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM at Drillers Stadium.
