Cards Take Fifth Straight

August 25, 2009 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

Lance Lynn pitched six solid innings and the Springfield Cardinals won their fifth straight game, as the Redbirds opened their four-game series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals with a 5-1 win at Arvest Ballpark.

Lynn (11-4) allowed just one run on three hits over six innings, earning his team-leading 11th victory of the year, helping Springfield to their fifth straight win overall.

Springfield's offense launched three home runs in support of Lynn, as Andrew Brown, Colt Sedbrook and Joe Mather all connected.

The Naturals got to Lynn for a first-inning run, as Jarrod Dyson opened the frame with a double, then scored on Jeff Bianchi's RBI single to right field, putting the Naturals up 1-0.

Brown, who punched a walk-off homer to end Monday night's game, ripped a two-run homer in his first at-bat on Tuesday, as his seventh home run of the year put the Cards in front 2-1.

Sedbrook hit his third home run since joining the Cards, a solo shot to open the third against Naturals' starter Everett Teaford (3-7).

Lynn was replaced by Casey Mulligan in the seventh, as Mulligan went on to throw a pair of scoreless relief innings.

Mather added some insurance with an eighth-inning solo shot off of reliever Federico Castaneda, making it 4-1. The home run for Mather is his first since rejoining Springfield here in 2009.

Pete Kozma's two-out RBI single gave the Cards a four-run cushion in the ninth, making it a 5-1 game.

Gary Daley followed Mulligan and spun a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the win.

Scott Gorgen (3-4) looks to rebound after a tough start in his last outing, as he goes for the Cards on Wednesday night. Northwest Arkansas, now losers of seven straight games, will send Matt Kniginyzky (5-9) to the mound at 7:00pm, in game two of the four-game series.

The Cards return to Hammons Field on Tuesday, September 1st, as they open the final home stand of the 2009 regular season. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. We hope to see you at Hammons Field...Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
