Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - Winston-Salem used strong starting pitching and numerous defensive mistakes from Potomac to snap a three-game skid in winning 6-3 over the Nationals on Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Warthog's starter Ryan Rodriguez collected his first win in his second start of the season and Potomac committed five errors to allow Winston-Salem to win game three of the four-game series after dropping the first two.
The Nationals (13-10) started the scoring with a two-out rally in the first inning. After Rodriguez retired the first two batters, Dee Brown walked and scored on an RBI double by Luke Montz. A throwing error by Winston-Salem allowed Montz to reach third base and he would score on Matt Rogelstad's RBI single to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead. The Warthogs cut the deficit in half with a two-out RBI by Tyler Reves in the second inning.
Winston-Salem (13-11) took advantage of sloppy Potomac defense in the third inning to take the lead by scoring a pair of runs. C.J Lang led off the innings with a single. Aaron Cunningham followed with a bunt single down the third base line. Rogelstad tried to make a bare handed play at first, but he threw the ball into the right field corner. That error allowed Lang to score from first and with Cunningham racing for third base, an errant throw from right field ended up in the seats, allowing Cunningham to jog home giving Winston-Salem a 3-2 lead.
The Warthogs added a run in the fourth inning when Lang hit into a double play with runners on the corners, but it did allow Micah Schnurstein to score and extended Winston-Salem's advantage to 4-2. Winston-Salem would add another run as Schnurstein led off the fifth inning with a solo shot of Nationals starting pitcher Clint Everts.
Steve Mortimer hit an RBI single with two-outs in the sixth inning to cut the Warthogs lead to 5-3. Winston-Salem added an insurance run on a two-out RBI single by David Cook in the ninth inning to finalize the scoring at 6-3. Rodriguez (1-0) earned his first win in tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. John Luhan collected his first save for the Warthogs as he tossed two perfect innings while striking out four. Everts (1-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings.
The Warthogs will be looking for a series split in the final game of the four-game series which will take place on Thursday, May 3 at 7:30 PM at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium. Winston-Salem will send RHP Kyle McCulloch (2-1, 2.73) to the mound and Potomac will counter with RHP Shairon Martis (0-3, 5.89).
