Pelicans Go From No-No To Oh No In Salem

May 2, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

SALEM, VA - On Wednesday night Pelicans starting pitcher Jairo Cuevas retired the first 13 batters he faced in succession and worked a no-hitter for 4.2 innings, but allowed a two-run triple in the bottom of the 5th inning to Salem third baseman Billy Hart, which ignited the Avalanche offense. The Avs went on to score one run or more in each of their final four trips to the plate, including six runs in the bottom of the 8th to dismantle the Pelicans 10-1. One night after the Pelicans bats collected a season-high 13 hits, they were held to a season-low three as they dropped to 12-14 on the season, while Salem improved to 12-12.

The Pelicans got off to a favorable start and struck for a run in the top of the 1st inning without the benefit of a hit. Lead-off hitter Quentin Davis drew a walk to start the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a ground out by Elvis Andrus. Then, J.D. Roberts knocked a ground ball to first base, which was fielded cleanly by Salem's Mark Ori, who threw to the plate in an effort to chop down Davis at the plate, but Davis slid across the dish safely with the first run of the ballgame.

With Cuevas cruising along on the mound it appeared that one run might be all that the Birds would need, but in the 5th Salem erased that notion. Cuevas allowed the first Salem base runner of the night by issuing a one-out walk to Ole Sheldon. Cuevas also walked the next batter, Mitch Einertson to put two aboard the base paths. After striking out Jose Lopez to coming within a strike of working five straight no-hit innings Hart belted a high fly ball into the right field corner which fell out of the mitt of Pelicans right fielder Willie Cabrera and rolled to the fence. They ruled it a triple, which put the Avalanche on top 2-1.

An inning later the Avalanche began extended their lead with one swing as Josh Flores connected for his second home run of the season, a solo shot, to give Salem a 3-1 lead. The Avalanche continued their offensive assault by plating a run in the 7th on an RBI single into centerfield from former University of Tennessee star Eric King. Then, in the 8th the Avalanche busted loose with six runs on six hits against Pelicans reliever Kevin Gunderson highlighted by a two-run double off the lumber of Jose Lopez and a two-run single delivered by Hart. The six-run frame game the Avalanche a more than comfortable 10-1 lead, which is how the game would end.

Cabrera, J.D. Roberts and Jose Camarena each collected a hit for the Pelicans. On the hill Cuevas remains winless this season, 0-4, after allowing three runs on just a pair of hits, while striking out five in six innings. Salem's Brad James earned the win and improved to a perfect 4-0 by virtue of tossing seven strong innings in which he held the Pelicans to just one run on one hit and three walks.

On Thursday night the Pelicans take on the Salem Avalanche in game three of a four-game series. Right-hander Moises Hernandez (3-1, 2.86 ERA) will start for the Pelicans while righty Sergio Perez (2-2, 3.92 ERA) will go for the Avalanche.
