Winston-Salem, NC - Two of the best pitchers in the Carolina League faced off in front off over 5,000 fans at Ernie Shore Field, but it was the offenses that prevailed. Kinston scored seven runs in the first four innings and knocked Warthogs starter Lucas Harrell (7-2) out of game after three innings, as the Indians went on to an 8-4 victory in the second game of their three-game series with Winston-Salem. Harrell (7-2), who entered the game with a Carolina League best 1.85 ERA, pitched his shortest outing of the year. He tossed three innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and walking two batters. Indians starter Joe Ness (8-2), who entered the game with the third best ERA in the league, gave up four runs in the first three innings before settling down and earning the win. The Warthogs scored two runs in the first inning when Robert Valido and Victor Mercedes led off the game with singles. After a strikeout by Josh Hansen, Chris Kelly smacked a two-run double to left field to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead. Kinston scored a run in the top of the third, but the Warthogs answered with an RBI single from Cory Haggerty to score Sean Smith and put Winston-Salem up 3-1. The Warthogs early offense was spoiled as Kinston exploded for six runs over the next two innings to put the game away, as they cruised to the 8-4 win. Mercedes, finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and Kelly ended the night 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Warthogs offensive attack. Brandon Pinckney, Rodney Choy Foo, Javi Herrera and Jose Constanza combined to go 9-for-14 with four runs scored and three RBI for Kinston. The final game of this three-game series will take place on July 4th at Ernie Shore Field with the first pitch at 7 PM. A special fireworks show will take place at the conclusion of the game. The Warthogs will send RHP Carlos Torres to the mound, while the Indians will counter with LHP Scott Lewis.
