Pelicans shut down Potomac hitters

Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have a new starting pitcher whose name is easy to remember and who has been virtually unscored upon in his only two outings since being called up in the second half of the year.

Left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes (1-0, 0.74) was sterling on Monday night as the Pelicans beat the Nationals 5-0 at Pfitzner Stadium. Reyes went seven innings, scattering seven hits and walking one while striking out six.

It was the second good outing for Reyes who tossed eight innings against Frederick three games ago and only allowed one earned run.

Tonight, Reyes showed he was an equal opportunity heartbreaker as he left every Potomac hitter who reached base stranded out on the paths.

Myrtle Beach jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning off the P-Nats' starting pitcher Clint Everts (4-6, 5.55), on a 3-run homer by Kala Ka'aihue. They tacked on one more in the fifth when Mark Jurich led off the inning with his third four-bagger of the year. The Pelicans would add another for good measure, this time in the ninth inning off reliever Tom Wilson (4-1, 3.73).

Six P-Nats reached scoring position, but each time, it was Reyes turn to bear down and go to work, recording however many outs needed to get out of the inning unscathed.

Potomac's best chance to score was in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ender Chavez struck out to end Potomac's threat.

Both teams back at Pfitzner Stadium on Tuesday evening at 6:35. Fans will be treated to an Independence Day fireworks show after the game, as well as have the chance to participate in a tennis ball toss to win prizes.

Gates will open an hour-and-a-half before game time.

On the mound for the P-Nats will be Brett Nyquist. The lefty was recently called up from Savannah for his second stint with Potomac. James Parr will be Nyquist's counterpart. The right-hander is 3-5 with a 5.40 ERA in 12 appearances this year. Ten of those have been starts.
