Pelicans put on early fireworks show, blast Nats

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The fireworks blasted off one day early for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (7-3, 42-38) as they powered their way past the Potomac Nationals (4-6, 37-43) on Monday night, 5-0. Home runs from 1B Kala Ka'aihue and DH Mark Jurich, combined with a sensational pitching performance by Jo-Jo Reyes (W, 1-0) paved the way for the shut out victory in game two of the three-game series. The Pelicans have now won six straight road games and 14 of their last 19 away from home.

As they did in game one the Pelicans drew first blood in the opening inning. After a lead-off walk from 2B J.C. Holt and single to right by CF Matt Young, Ka'aihue belted a 2-2 pitch high and deep over the left field fence, a three-run homer, which put the Birds up 3-0. It was Ka'aihue's 2nd homer as a Pelican and his 17th of the year after hitting 15 in Rome during the first half.

The score remained 3-0 until the top of the 5th which is when Jurich unloaded a solo shot over the right field foul pole, extending the lead to 4-0. The blast by Jurich was his 3rd longball of the year and his second in three games.

In the top of the 9th the Pelicans tacked on another run thanks to an RBI single into left field from C Clint Sammons, which drove in Ka'aihue who had reached on a walk earlier in the inning. The RBI base knock by Sammons pushed the Birds' lead to 5-0, which is what the scoreboard would read when all was said and done.

Reyes was fantastic in his second start with the Pelicans. The lefty spun seven scoreless innings in which he gave up seven hits, walked one and fanned six. After his first two starts Reyes has allowed just one earned run in 12.2 innings and he has struck out 13. Relievers Ralph Roberts and Michael Nix kept the shut out together by tossing the final two innings in scoreless fashion. Potomac starter Clint Everts (L, 4-6) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings. Everts struck out seven and walked three in the loss.

The Pelicans offensive attack was led by Sammons who went 3-4 with an RBI. Ka'aihue finished the evening 1-3 including his three-run blast, and two runs scored. Jurich added a 2-3 effort with a homer, and Holt, Young, LF Carl Loadenthal, and RF Steven Doetsch each added a hit.

On Tuesday night the Pelicans look to sweep the Potomac Nationals in the series finale which begins at 6:35 pm. Fans can listen to all of the action on ESPN Radio 93.9 FM, 93.7 FM, and 1050 AM "The Team," or on the Internet at myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
