Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Myrtle Beach Pelicans lefty Kelvin Villa, the only Myrtle Beach All-Star, was named as the Pitcher of the Week in the Carolina League this afternoon. Villa, a 20-year-old from Salcedo, DR, turned in the week's best pitching performance on Saturday. Although he did not get credit for the Pelicans' 3-2 win, he went eight innings, striking out seven of 28 batters faced. He allowed three hits and two runs, only one of them earned, and walked one batter. He lowered his season ERA from 2.69 to 2.51, fourth-best in the league. He also pitched one scoreless inning in Tuesday's All-Star Game.
Villa became the third Pelican this season to be named as one of the Carolina League players of the week. CF Matt Young was honored as the Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of May 22-28 and former LF Brandon Jones the Player of the Week for the following week of May 29-June 4.
