Warriors Finish Regular Season with Loss in Regina

Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

It was a disappointing end to an outstanding regular season for the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Moose Jaw dropped a 7-4 game to the rival Regina Pats on Sunday afternoon at the Brandt Centre.

With their playoff spot secured, the Warriors were without some key players due to rest and injuries for the regular season finale.

"I thought for the most part, we played pretty hard, it was just a matter of you've got some guys that were there to get some opportunities, but the season ended the way it ended, it doesn't really matter, now we got playoffs coming up," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said.

The loss puts the Warriors' record at 37-24-4-3 to end the regular season. They finished in fourth place in the Eastern Conference and will have home ice advantage in their first round series against Saskatoon, starting on Friday.

Warriors defenceman Denton Mateychuk scored twice in the loss. He said the team will take some lessons from the loss and move on.

"We did a lot of things well, we did some things that we can improve on, there's things we want to clean up before next Friday," the 17-year-old defenceman said.

Robert Baco and Cordel Larson chipped in with two assists each in the game.

While the Warriors are disappointed about the loss, the team is excited to be headed to the post-season.

"We have a team that can win and do some damage in the playoffs, so we're all excited for that," Mateychuk said. "We can definitely surprise some teams."

The Warriors and Pats traded goals in the first period with Riley Niven scoring his sixth of the year and Eric Alarie picking up his 25th of the season.

Regina countered with a pair of goals from Cole Dubinsky and another from Zane Rowan to take a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes.

Mateychuk tied the game for the Warriors with a wrist shot from the point that found its way into the back of net for a power play goal with 3:51 left in the second.

The Pats answered back just over a minute later on goal from Logan Nijhoff.

The Warriors weren't done though as Robert Baco forced a turnover and raced up ice shorthanded, he found Mateychuk, who tied the game back up with his 13th of the season.

A pair of power play goals from Tanner Howe and Connor Bedard in the third period allowed the Pats to pull away. Bedard added an empty net goal in the final minute to seal the game.

Jackson Unger made 27 saves in the loss, while the Warriors were outshot 34-24 on the night.

The Warriors were 1-for-1 on the power play, while Regina went 2-for-4 with the man advantage in the game.

Moose Jaw opens the 2022 WHL Playoffs when they host the Saskatoon Blades for games one and two on Friday and Saturday night at Mosaic Place.

Single game tickets go on sale on Monday.
