Spokane Chiefs News Release
Victoria, B.C. - The Spokane Chiefs clinched a playoff spot Saturday night with a gritty 4-2 win over the Victoria Royals.
It was Spokane who struck first this time, opening the scoring after a nifty feed from Nick McCarry to Cade Hayes who sniped the puck into the corner of the net at 11:14.
The Royals answered just 50 seconds later, as Anthony Wilson scored his seventh of the year to tie things up 1-1.
But the Chiefs regained their momentum at 13:41 when Reed Jacobson chipped in his third of the year. A little less than five minutes later, a scrum in the crease tipped in Spokane's favor when rookie winger Ty Cheveldayoff shoveled a loose puck through Tyler Palmer's legs and into the net to give the Chiefs a 3-1 lead. Berkly Catton and Cade Hayes earned assists on the play.
The Chiefs were able to kill off two penalties in the second period (Grady Lane, 4:36 and Cheveldayoff, 13:07) and keep the Royals at bay. They managed to tack on a fourth goal as Yannick Proske connected with defenseman Raegan Wiles in front of the net, who tapped it in with some flare of his own.
Despite a lone Tarun Fizer goal at 7:24 in the third, Spokane was able to stay strong and close out the rest of the game to win 4-2.
Mason Beaupit was solid in net for Spokane, turning aside 35-of-37 shots, while Tyler Palmer stopped 23-of-27 Chiefs shots.
Spokane went 1-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Up next, the Chiefs will start their playoff series with the Kamloops Blazers on the road Friday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m.
