Walleye Beat Elmira 4-3 on Friday Night

(Toledo, OH)-The Toledo Walleye beat the Elmira Jackals, 4-3 at the Huntington Center on Friday night in front of a crowd of 6,023. The Walleye are now 16-18-2-1 overall this season and 8-9-0-1 at home.

Elmira had most of the scoring chances in the early going of the contest but Joe Palmer was steady in goal and the teams were scoreless at the midway point of the opening period. Elmira out-shot Toledo 7-4 through the first ten minutes.

At 10:08 in the first, Mike Hedden opened up the scoring with his 7th goal of the year in his first game back from the injured reserve list. The lone assist on the goal went to Tyler Doig.

The Walleye made it 2-0 on a nifty score from Doig at 18:39 of the first period. It was the 8th goal of the year for Doig with the assist going to Chris DiDomenico.

Each team had 11 shots on goal in the first period.

The visitors would get on the board to cut the lead in half at 10:51 of the middle period. Elmira goal scored by Michael Dubuc (his 12th of the year) and the score was 2-1 in favor of the Walleye.

Randy Rowe would get the Walleye lead back up to two with his 10th of the year at 14:06 of the middle period with an assist to Sal Peralta.

Elmira would again cut the lead to one goal as Brock McBride beat Palmer five hole at 18:30 of the 2nd period with assists to Anderson and Tifu.

The score after two periods of play was 3-2 in favor of the Walleye with Elmira holding the edge in shots 26-19.

There wasn't any scoring in the third period until the 14:14 mark when A.J. Perry tied the game with his 12th marker of the year. Elmira assists going to McBride and Tifu.

The Huntington Center erupted several minutes later when Ryan Stokes lit the lamp with a blast from the left wing at 17:20 for his 4th goal of the year. Stokes was assisted on the goal by Dominic Osman and Kyle Rogers. This proved to be the game-winner as Elmira was unable to tie the game with the extra attacker over the last 1:34 of the game.

Toledo out-shot Elmira 10-8 in the final period but Elmira out-shot the Walleye 34-29 for the game.

Toledo's Joe Palmer earned the win, stopping 31 of 34 shots. Palmer is now 7-9-0 on the year. Toledo went 0-2 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill for the game.

Walleye Wrap-Up:

-Toledo's last three-game winning streak was last January (6 straight wins from January 8-17).

-Former Walleye goaltender Jordan Pearce was recalled by the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. He becomes the 2nd Walleye player to go to the NHL (Thomas McCollum dressed for the Red Wings earlier this month).

-Forward Mike Hedden was activated from injured reserve on Friday. He had been out since December 26th.

-Defenseman David Phillips re-joined the team after spending three weeks with the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL).

-The Toledo Walleye return home to the Huntington Center on Saturday night versus Elmira at 7:00 pm and then will host the Cincinnati Cyclones on Sunday at 4:00 pm.

-Ohio State Buckeye WR Dane Sanzenbacher will be signing autographs on Saturday and the Walleye will be wearing special camouflage jerseys for Military Night.
