WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 20, 2011) - After trading early blows, ten walks came back to burn the Dash as Salem picked up a 7-4 win on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Red Sox snapped their seven-game losing streak and won their first game against Winston Salem this season.

The headliner of Friday's game was Salem starter Junichi Tazawa, who was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Tazawa missed all of last season, after appearing with the Boston Red Sox in his first season with the organization in 2009.

Salem (22-17) put up a crooked number in the top of the second inning. Mark Wagner led off with a double and David Mailman followed with a walk. After Zach Gentile sacrificed the runners into scoring position, Derrik Gibson walked to load the bases. Dash starter Cameron Bayne retired Jeremy Hazelbaker before Peter Hissey doubled to left field, scoring two runs. Kolbrin Vitek followed with an infield single to score Gibson, giving the Sox a 3-0 lead.

The Dash (18-23) responded right away. In the bottom of the inning, the first three hitters reached on base hits. Ian Gac and Andy Wilkins singled, and both scored on Nick Ciolli's triple. Luis Sierra drove in Ciolli with a ground out to second base to tie the game at three. Kyle Colligan then walked, and scored on a double by Austin Yount to put the Dash ahead 4-3.

Winston threatened against Tazawa again in the fourth after Wilkins doubled and Ciolli walked, but Tazawa set down the next three hitters to escape the inning. Tazawa ended his first rehab appearance after four innings in which he gave up four runs (all earned) and struck out two.

The 4-3 lead would hold up for Bayne, as he left after a quality start of six innings and three runs (all earned). In the seventh, relief pitcher Wes Whisler walked the first three hitters of the inning. Hazelbaker was the first to draw the free pass in the frame, and he came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game. After reliever Matt Wickswat induced a fielder's choice ground out, that caught Hissey heading home, Dan Butler hit a sac fly to plate the go-ahead run.

The Red Sox added two more in the eighth. Wickswat walked Gentile with one out in the inning and advanced to second on a single by Gibson. Both runners came home to score on Hissey's double to open up a 7-4 Sox lead. The Sox bullpen shut down the Dash from there, and that was the final score.

Whisler (0-1) got the loss after he didn't retire a batter in the seventh. Will Latimer (1-0) picked up the win in relief, and Anatanaer Batista earned his first save of the season.

Winston-Salem and Salem continue their series Saturday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. LHP Joe Serafin (0-2, 4.09) starts for the Dash against RHP Pete Ruiz (1-2, 5.67). Fans can catch all the action starting at 6:45 p.m. on www.wsdash.com.
