Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats couldn't stop the recent hitting surge from the Potomac Nationals, losing 6-2 in the first game of a six-game homestand.
The Nationals jumped out to an early lead thanks to some heavy hitting in the first inning. Destin Hood doubled home Jeff Kobernus. He then scored on a two-run home run by Steven Souza to make the score 3-0.
Lynchburg scored in the first inning for the sixth straight game. Todd Cunningham led off the inning by reaching first base on a hit by pitch. He came across the plate on a double by Phil Gosselin to cut the lead to 3-1.
Hood had another big hit in the third, tripling and scoring later in the inning. Justin Bloxom also scored to put the Nationals up 5-1.
Lynchburg starter Dimasther Delgado failed to pitch six innings for the first time in four outings, and gave up a season-high five earned runs. The Nationals added another run in the sixth off of reliever Blaine Sims.
The Hillcats scored a run in the eighth, but ultimately they fell 6-2.
Delgado took the loss to fall to 4-4. Potomac starter Mitchell Clegg pitched seven innings to pick up the win and move to 2-2. With their fourth straight loss, the Hillcats fell to 14-25, while Potomac moved to 17-23 on the season.
The Hillcats will try to end the skid Saturday night. Righty Zeke Spruill (2-4), coming off of a complete game shutout, will pitch for Lynchburg, while Potomac counters with righty Trevor Holder (1-5).
Saturday will be the Fifth Annual Breast Cancer Awareness night at Calvin Falwell Field. Half of the price of each ticket sold will be donated to the fight against breast cancer, and the first thousand fans through the gate will receive a free t-shirt. The Hillcats will wear pink and black commemorative jerseys and hats, which will be auctioned off in a silent auction during the game.
First pitch is at 6:05 pm, gates will open at 5:00. If you can't make it to the game, the Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 5:40 pm. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
