Walks and Errors Lead to Long Night in Green Bay as Rafters Fall
July 16, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Green Bay, WI- One night after the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters got seven plus innings from starter, Brad Stroik, Griffin Glaude lasted just two innings and issued four walks as the Rafters lost, 20-5, Monday evening at Joannes Stadium. The 15 walks allowed by the Rafters pitching staff was a season high and was part of a three hour and 18 minute affair against Green Bay, the Rafters longest game this season. The loss was the third of the season for the Rafters at Joannes Stadium and was their fourth overall to the Bullfrogs and third-straight.
Pitching and defense were a major concern Monday evening as the Rafters committed four errors while issuing 16 walks. 12 of the 20 runs scored Monday night by Green Bay were courtesy of Rafters error or walks committed.
Erik Payne helped the Rafters get on the board early as the Virginia Tech junior homered in his second consecutive game to give the Rafters the early lead, 2-0. Cort Brinson followed with a walk and Charlie Curl reached on a single before Taylor Stell roped a double down the right field line to plate Brinson, giving the Rafters the lead, 3-0.
The advantage wouldn't last long as the Bull Frogs sent eight men to the plate in a five run inning that included a grand slam by Bryant Burrelson. The grand slam was the second this season allowed by the Rafters pitching staff and the second at Joannes Stadium. The last grand slam against the Rafters came in the second inning of a July 10 game and was part of a six-RBI night for Boomer White. Green Bay led 5-3 at the end of the second inning and wouldn't look back.
Robbie Coman helped the Rafters get back in the game in the fifth inning when the Virginia freshman helped the Rafters plate two more runs with an RBI single in the fifth. The base hit by Coman was part of a three hit inning that included singles by Jackson Slaid and Michael Jurgella to close the gap, 5-7.
The pitching staff labored all evening as Wisconsin Rapids allowed 56 batters to face six different pitchers on the night. All six pitchers sent to the hill Rafters allowed at least one walk and three different arms issued three or more free passes on the evening. The 15 walks allowed by the Rafters is a season high.
The 12 base hits by the Rafters this season marks the fifth time - and third straight against Green Bay - that the Rafters have clubbed at 12 hits in a ballgame and still lost.
Green Bay would combine to send 20 men to the plate in the sixth and seventh inning, successfully tallying 10 more runs to put the game out of reach.
The two teams will resume a home-and-home series tomorrow evening when Green Bay and Wisconsin Rapids meet for the final time this season at Witter Field. The Bull Frogs, with a win tomorrow, can clinch the season series against the Rafters. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Witter Field and fans can listen to Tuesday night's broadcast by tuning into the leagues YouTube channel or to the radio broadcast on WFHR AM 1320.
