Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Dash outfielder Steele Walker belted his second home run of the season and first at BB&T Ballpark, but the Fayetteville Woodpeckers came back to earn a 7-2 victory on Tuesday night.
With the Dash (22-22) leading 1-0 and two outs in the bottom of the third, Walker crushed a towering solo home run over the right-field seats to push the lead to two runs. However, the Woodpeckers (21-24) responded with seven unanswered runs.
Following Walker's home run, Fayetteville cut into the lead in the top of the fourth against Dash starter Jorgan Cavanerio. Scott Schreiber led off the frame by doubling down the left-field line and promptly stole third base. On a ground ball by Valdez, Schrieber was thrown out attempting score from third base. However, Valdez reached second on the play and later scored on a groundout by Alfredo Angarita.
Trailing 2-1, the Woodpeckers scored three runs in the top of the eighth against Dash reliever Jose Nin (1-1). Schreiber led off the frame by doubling to deep left-center field. Following Schreiber's double, Valdez singled and Michael Papierski walked to load the bases. Angarita then grounded into a fielder's choice to score Schreiber and tied the ballgame.
After Jacob Meyers walked to reload the bases, Jonathan Arauz singled up the middle to score Valdez and Angarita to give the Woodpeckers a 4-2 lead. Arauaz finished the night 5-for-6 and reached a new career high with five hits.
Fayetteville continued to add on in the top of the ninth. Jake Adams led off the inning with a solo shot down the left-field line to make it 5-2. Later in the frame, Jacob Meyers hit a two-run single to push the Woodpeckers lead to 7-2.
For the second consecutive night, Winston-Salem got on the board in the bottom of the first. Tyler Frost led off the ballgame by reaching on an error by Fayetteville starter Brett Conine. The next batter, Nick Madrigal, was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. After Conine recorded back-to-back strikeouts, Zach Remillard blooped a single into right field, allowing Frost to score to make it 1-0.
However, the Dash were held to no runs on three hits in the final four innings. Leovanny Rodriguez (3-2) earned the win by pitching two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh. Willy Collado then closed out the ballgame by holding the Dash without a hit in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Dash continue their series with the Woodpeckers on Wednesday morning. Right-hander Lincoln Henzman (2-2, 6.11 ERA) is set to take the hill for Winston-Salem against fellow righty Enoli Paredes (3-1, 1.86 ERA) for Fayetteville. First pitch is set for 11 a.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
Following an Education Day on Wednesday morning, the series finale will be a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday and a Pups in the Park Night presented by Handy and Handy Orthodontics. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
