Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD. - A pair of three-run home runs propelled the Frederick Keys (21-22) to a 6-5 win after a late surge from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (17-29) on Tuesday night at Nymeo Field. Austin Hays and J.C. Escarra both powered three-run shots in the second inning to score all of Frederick's runs. Myrtle Beach scored a pair of runs in the ninth to come within a run 6-5 but pinch-hitter Grant Fennell struck out to end the game. Keys pitching combined to strikeout 12 batters.

The Keys struck for six runs on six hits in the second, all coming with two-outs in the inning. Hays' home run was prefaced by a pair of singles from Yeltsin Gudino and Stuart Levy while Cole Billingsley and Jomar Reyes followed with base hits of their own to set up Escarra's home run that sailed over the third deck of billboards in right field.

Tyler Payne cut the lead in half 6-3 with a three-run home run in the third inning, the lone blemish on Michael Baumann's outing. The Keys starter threw a season-high 90 pitches as the Pelicans worked lengthy at-bats and knocked him out of the game before the end of the fifth. Baumann finished the day with eight strikeouts, giving up three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.

Steven Klimek (3-1) got the win in relief after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings. He induced an inning-ending, groundball double-play to spoil a first and second situation for the Pelicans in the fifth and also erased a runner in the seventh with a double-play.

Diogenes Almengo (S, 3) came out of the bullpen in the eighth inning and stranded a runner at second but ran into trouble in the ninth. He gave up an RBI double to Kevonte Mitchell and a run-scoring single to Carlos Sepulveda before retiring Fennell to win it 6-5.

Javier Assad (2-4) gave up both home runs to Hays and Escarra and all nine hits to the Keys lineup. He lasted 5.2 innings and struck out one batter.

The Keys take on the Pelicans on Wednesday night, May 22 for game three of this four-game set. LHP Cameron Bishop (0-2, 3.67) starts for Frederick opposite Pelicans' starter Alex Lange (1-6, 10.88). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the game can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 p.m.

The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
