Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (August 4, 2014) - Jacob Morris stood 90 feet from home in a tie game with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning when a passed ball gave the speedy outfielder an opening. He broke for the plate and scored the game-winning run for the Kannapolis Intimidators to beat the Hickory Crawdads, 5-4 (F/10). Morris finished the night 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Morris, the White Sox 24th round pick in the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Arkansas, led off the 10th with a base hit, moved to second base on a Brett Austin sac-bunt, and advanced to third when Carl Thomore grounded out to second base.
Kannapolis (53-58, 24-20 Second Half) found itself in extra innings after the Crawdads overcame a 4-3 deficit in the top of the ninth. Hickory was down to its final strike when Michael De Leon singled down the left-field line to score pinch-runner Travis Demeritte from second base, tying the game.
Matt Abramson (3-6) earned the win for Kannapolis despite also being tagged with his fifth blown save of the season. The right-hander bounced back from the ninth inning to work around an infield single in a scoreless top of the 10th. Jose Valdepina (2-2) took the loss for Hickory.
Hickory plated two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI-doubles by Evan Van Hoosier and Kellin Deglan.
Kannapolis overcame the early 2-0 deficit with a 3-run home half of the first thanks to four straight hits. Danny Hayes followed base-hits by Christian Stringer and Trey Michalczewski with an RBI-double, and Morris put the Intimidators ahead with a 2-run double for a 3-2 lead. Morris doubled to lead off the third and scored on a Carl Thomore sac-fly for a 4-2 lead.
Hickory got a run back in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch to score Kellin Deglan to pull the Crawdads within one, 4-3.
Thad Lowry bounced back from a 2-run first inning to keep Hickory off the scoreboard for the next four frames. He finished the night after 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Dylan Chavez worked 2 and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Hickory starter Frank Lopez lasted 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two. Ricardo Rodriguez quieted the Kannapolis offense for 4 and 1/3 innings in relief.
The Intimidators continue this 3-game series against the Crawdads (Rangers) on Tuesday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Every Tuesday is Arby's Two-for-Tuesday featuring 2-for-1 tickets when you show any Arby's proof of purchase at the box office.
