Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds were swept in a doubleheader by the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Monday evening. After rain washed out two nights at Perdue Stadium, the Shorebirds struggled to regain their offense in back-to-back 2-0 shutout defeats.
Both games of the doubleheader followed a very similar profile. Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in both games. In the opener, three singles from Anderson, Avila and Haynal combined to drive in the first run. In the nightcap, three singles from Munoz, Avila and Cordova produced the opening run in the second inning.
In game one, Jose Adames pitched an abbreviated outing with three shutout innings. Sam Alvis earned the win with three scoreless innings, while Tyler Kinley locked up the save. Steven Brault only surrendered two runs in five innings, but he suffered his sixth consecutive losing decision since June 20th.
In the second game, Domingo German was lights out in the start. German allowed a single to Anthony Vega as the only baserunner in four innings of work. Esmerling de la Rosa and Miguel del Pozo combined to complete the second consecutive shutout. Delmarva had just two baserunners all game in the nightcap. Janser Severino settled for the defeat despite allowing just one run in five innings.
With the losses, Delmarva (56-57) has now lost six consecutive series. The Shorebirds have dropped under .500 for the first time since they were 17-18 on May 11th.
Delmarva will try to avoid a sweep on Tuesday evening. The Shorebirds turn to left-hander Luis Gonzalez (6-0, 2.20) against Greensboro righty Ryan Wertenberger (1-0, 4.60). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Perdue Stadium.
