Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons dropped a rain-shortened series finale against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos by a score of 3-2 Wednesday afternoon in front of 7,455 fans at Regions Field.
Donald Lutz started the scoring early with a two-out solo home run against starterTerry Doyle (3-4, 5.93) in the first inning. However, the Barons would answer quickly, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Rangel Ravelo.
The Barons took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, thanks to a little helpfrom the Pensacola defense. Michael Earley led off the inning with a base hit, stole second base and went to third when the throw from catcher Chris Berset went into centerfield. Earley scored a batter later on a base hit by Josh Richmond. The RBI was Richmond's team-leading 25th of the year.
Juan Silverio provided the tying and winning runs for the Wahoos down the stretch, hitting a sacrifice fly in the third to tie the game at 2-2. In the fifth, he lined a two-out double down the left field line, scoring Rey Navarro to give Pensacola a 3-2 lead.
Inthe sixth, the rain, which had been consistent for much of the game, picked up steam and forced the field to be coverd with the tarp. After an hour long delay, the game was called due to rain.
