Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. (MAY 13, 2014) - Jackson (16-23) dropped their fifth consecutive series of the season with a 10-7 setback to the Tennessee Smokies (23-16) on Tuesday night. Ketel Marte (2x4, R, BB, K), Nate Melendres (2x5, 2 R, RBI) and Mike Dowd (2x3, BB) each had two-hit nights, but it wasn't enough as the Generals were once again doomed by a big offensive inning for the Smokies.
The two teams have combined for 77 runs in the first four games of the series, a Jackson franchise record. There were five triples combined in the game which was two shy of the Southern League record.
The game was scoreless until the third inning. With one out Smokies catcher Taylor Davis tripled to right center. He scored on a double from Stephen Bruno, who scored one batter later on Kris Bryant's eleventh home run of the season. It was a three-run homer to make the score 4-0.
Two batters later Rubi Silva drove in Dustin Geiger with a double, then Silva scored when Jae-Hoon Ha reached on an error. After three innings Tennessee led the game 6-0.
Jackson came back just two innings later. Melendres scored on Patrick Kivlehan's (1x4, R, RBI, BB) first Double-A base hit. John Hicks (1x2, RBI, 2 BB) coaxed a bases loaded walk that scored Dan Paolini (1x4, R, RBI, BB) to make the score 6-2 Smokies. The walk also extended Hicks's on bases streak to 16 games. Then Mickey Wiswall (1x3, R, 2 RBI) picked up a sacrifice fly to score Kivlehan. Leon Landry (0x4, RBI) then reached on a fielder's choice to score Rivers and the Tennessee lead was cut to 6-4 after four innings.
The score remained the same until the sixth inning. With two outs Bryant picked up his second hit and fourth RBI of the game with a single that scored John Andreoli. Jackson got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Wiswall hit his third home run of the season and the score was 7-5 heading to the seventh inning.
Jeudy Valdez tripled to lead off the eighth inning and scored on Davis's double, his second extra base hit of the night. Davis then scored on a single from Bruno, and the lead was back to four runs for the visitors at 9-5.
The Smokies added one more in the top half of the ninth and Jackson added two more in the bottom half to make the final score 10-7 in favor of Tennessee.
Tennessee native P.J. Francescon (5-1) earned his fifth win of the season as he pitched 2.2 innings in relief. Jackson starter Cam Hobson (3-3, 2.96) struck out five, but dropped to .500 on the year as he picked up third loss.
The Generals and Smokies will finish the five game series on Wednesday in Jackson. Tyler Olson (0-1, 5.73) will get the start for the Generals and the Smokies will start Corey Black (2-3, 2.16). The game is scheduled to start at 11:05 am and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
