Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
FARGO, ND - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (12-11) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-2 at Newman Outdoor Field on Saturday night.
Goldeyes' starting pitcher Duke von Schamann (2-2) delivered seven and one-third scoreless innings to earn the win. von Schamann scattered four hits, walked only two, and struck out four. From the fourth inning into the seventh, von Schamann retired 10 consecutive batters.
"Duke gave us the start we needed," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth . "He gave us a chance to get an early lead, and he was able to make it hold up. It was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Goldeyes. He mixed up his pitches and has been really good for us."
The Goldeyes jumped on the board early for a second straight night. Maikol Gonzalez hit a one-out double to right-centre. Three batters later, Jacob Rogers lined a two-out, RBI single to centre to give the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead. Gonzalez's double was the 100th of his professional career.
Wes Darvill opened the top of the second with a line drive single to centre and was sacrificed to second by Casio Grider . Darvill went to third on Tanner Murphy's groundout to second base, and came home with Winnipeg's second run when Adam Heisler pulled a line drive single to right. Heisler has now hit safely in eight consecutive games.
Gonzalez reached on an infield single leading off the top of the third. Josh Romanski advanced Gonzalez to second on a hit-and-run groundball to shortstop. Two batters later, Rogers came through again with a two-out, RBI single on a groundball up the middle.
von Schamann was relieved by Eric Eadington with a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the eighth. Eadington induced an inning-ending double play from left-hand batting Chad Mozingo.
The RedHawks (13-9) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Keury de la Cruz, Josh Mazzola, KD Kang, and Brian Humphries hit consecutive singles to cut the Goldeyes' lead to 3-1 and put the tying and winning runs on base. A wild pitch on a third strike to Luke Bailey allowed Mazzola to score the RedHawks' second run. After Kes Carter walked to reload the bases, Camreon McVey retired pinch hitter Ryan Wagner on a comebacker to the mound. McVey picked up his first save of the year.
Jose Almarante (1-1) took the loss for Fargo-Moorhead, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Almarante walked two and struck out four.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Edwin Carl (2-1, 4.37) faces right-hander Tyler Herron (3-0, 0.29). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
