St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - Two division leaders pulled off a trade on Saturday that benefits both teams. The St. Paul Saints needed an arm in the bullpen and the Lincoln Saltdogs needed a shortstop after Christian Ibarra had his contract purchased by the Minnesota Twins. The Saints sent shortstop Mike Gilmartin to the Saltdogs in exchange for reliever Zach Westcott plus another player to be named later.

The 24-year-old Westcott is a rookie in his second season of professional baseball and last year pitched for the Saltdogs. This season Westcott is 0-0 with a 4.36 ERA in eight games. In 10.1 innings pitched he walked seven and struck out eight while opponents are hitting .349 against him. Last year Westcott was solid for the Saltdogs going 5-2 with a 3.22 ERA in 22 games. In 44.2 innings pitched he walked 13 and struck out 36 while opponents hit just .222 against him.

Westcott is a graduate of Nova Southeastern and he went 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 18 relief appearances during his senior season in 2015. In 43.0 innings pitched he walked nine and struck out 59 while opponents hit just .208 against him.

One of Westcott's best season's came as a sophomore when he was a starter. He led the team in wins, going 9-2, and ERA at 2.27. He was named First Team All-SCC, Second Team ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region and Second Team Daktronics All-South Region.

Gilamrtin was hitting .326 with three homers and 10 RBI, but the Saints needed the roster spot for pitcher Cody Scarpetta. League rules allow a team to carry no more than five veterans and no more than two LS-5 players (or four vets and three LS-5). The Saints were at the limit with veterans Alonzo Harris, Tony Thomas, Angelo Songco, Mark Hamburger and Nate Hanson and the two LS-5 players Caleb Thielbar and Scarpetta.

The Saints currently have 22 players on their roster, one shy of the league maximum, 11 pitchers and 11 position players.
