Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, ND - In all three games of this series between Northern Division rivals Fargo-Moorhead and Winnipeg at Newman Outdoor Field, the ninth inning has provided plenty of action. Saturday night was no different with the 'Hawks scoring two in the bottom of the ninth in a 3-2 loss. The bases were loaded with two outs but unfortunately for the home team that's when the comeback halted.

Winnipeg didn't want this game to go like the last two for them and they came out firing, scoring a run in each of the first three innings. Maikol Gonzalez hit a double and then was driven in by Jacob Rogers in the first. In the second inning Wes Darvill came in on an RBI by Adam Heisler. The third was déjà vu when Gonzalez was brought in by another RBI by Jacobs.

With a 3-0 lead after the first three, Goldeyes starting pitcher Duke von Schamann was commanding on the mound. He only allowed four hits in his seven and a third innings pitched and blanked the RedHawks. The 6'5" right-hander never allowed more than one 'Hawks player on the basepaths at a time.

When it came the bottom of the ninth, it was do or die for the home team. Keury De La Cruz put some life into the offense with his third hit of the game, then Josh Mazzola continued his fantastic play against his former team with a single. K.D. Kang was the third 'Hawk in a row to single which loaded the bases for Brian Humphries. He ended up hitting an infield single in which the third basemen couldn't decide where he wanted to go with the ball, scoring De La Cruz. Mazzola then scored on a passed ball to cut the gap to 3-2. The next batter walked to load the bases back up, but then Goldeyes reliever Cameron McVey finally got a hold of the game and recorded the final out.

Jose Almarante (2-1) was the losing pitcher in a game that brings the RedHawks to 13-9. The Goldeyes are back above .500 at 12-11 with von Schamann (2-2) getting the win and McVey recording his first save of the year. The series finale will be 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Newman Outdoor Field.
