WINGNUTS OUTSLUG TEXAS
Behind a huge night from Brent Clevlen, the Wichita Wingnuts won their fifth straight Friday night, overpowering the Texas AirHogs 13-9 at Potter County Memorial Stadium. Wichita scored first for the second straight game in the series, plating one in the first. The visitors added to it in the second, when Clevlen made Griffin Russell pay for back-to-back two-out walks with a three-run homer. After Texas cut it to 4-3, the Wingnuts added three in the fourth on an RBI single by Martin Medina and two-run base hit from Richard Prigatano. In the fifth, T.J. Mittelstaedt became the first Wingnut to 20 RBIs in 2016, blasting a three-run shot to make it 11-3. Texas cut it back to a four-run game heading into the eighth, when Harrison Kain singled in a run and Clevlen capped off his five-hit, five-RBI night with an RBI double. The AirHogs got two back in their half of the eighth, before Frankie Reed slammed the door shut in the ninth to finish off Wichita's fifth straight victory. The win also moved the Wingnuts to within a game and a half of first-place Laredo in the AA South Division standings.
CLEVLEN ROCKS
Brent Clevlen kept his sizzling road trip going Friday night, posting a career-high five hits, the most by a Wingnut this year. The native Texan also drove in five on the night, joining Zack Cox as the two Wichita hitters to have a five-RBI game this season. Clevlen also added his team-leading sixth long ball of the year, and his third homer of the road trip. In his first four games of this trip, Clevlen is 10-for-20 with three home runs and 11 runs batted in.
SIX IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
The magic number for Wingnuts wins so far this season has been six, as they have scored six runs or more in 10 of their 11 wins in 2016. Overall, their record is 10-2 when they put up at least six runs, and just 1-9 when they fail to reach six. So far on the current road trip, Wichita has scored at least seven runs in all five games, and is averaging 9.2 runs per contest as they have gotten off to a 5-0 start on this seven-game trip through Kansas City and Texas. For the season, the Wingnuts are averaging 6.3 runs per game, trailing only the St. Paul Saints who have scored 6.6 runs per contest.
