Wichita Wingnuts News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - Martin Medina came through with the go-ahead single through a drawn in infield in the ninth inning to lift the Wichita Wingnuts to a 7-6 win over the Texas AirHogs Saturday at Potter County Memorial Stadium for their sixth straight victory.
Having led 6-0 earlier in the game, the Wingnuts (12-11) saw Texas (9-14) tie the game in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Juan Sanchez. But Wichita answered right back, as Brent Clevlen led off the ninth with a double off of Carlos Misell (1-1). After moving to third on a groundout, Medina's single brought Clevlen home to restore the visitors' lead.
Wingnuts closer Frankie Reed came on for the bottom of the ninth and after allowing a lead-off single, the lefty buckled down and retired the next three, including a pair of strikeouts, to earn his third save.
Wichita once again scored first, taking a 1-0 lead two batters into the contest when Christian Stringer brought Leo Vargas home with a double.
The visitors doubled their lead in then fourth, when Brennen Salgado collected an RBI double of his own.
The lead ballooned to six for Wichita with a four-run fifth. Clevlen collected his eighth RBI of the series with a single, Dustin Geiger singled home a pair, and Richard Prigatano completed the frame with a run-scoring knock of his own.
Texas started to work their way back into it in the bottom of the fifth, as Burt Reynolds hit his league-leading 10th homer of the season to make it 6-2.
The AirHogs closed the gap to 6-5 by the seventh, but Fabian Roman (2-0) induced an inning-ending double play to keep the Wingnuts lead in tact, before the home team tied the score in the next inning.
The win is Wichita's sixth in a row overall, and seventh straight road win. Their win and Laredo's loss to Lincoln also moves the Wingnuts to within a half game of the Lemurs in the South Division standings.
The Wingnuts go for a sweep of their four-game series with the AirHogs Sunday afternoon at Potter County Memorial Stadium. Wichita will send southpaw Charlie Leesman (1-1, 6.31) to the hill, while Texas will counter with right-hander Palmer Betts (2-1, 4.24). First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
