Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Oregon - The Northwest League announced on Tuesday that Volcanoes John Riley (C), Kevin Rivera (INF), Ashford Fulmer (OF) and Gio Brusa (OF) will represent Salem-Keizer on the 2016 Northwest League All-Star roster. The four Salem-Keizer players represented is tied for most by any team in the Northwest League.
The 2016 Northwest League / Pioneer League All-Star Game will be played at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah on Tuesday, August 2nd. It is the second time that the two leagues will play each other in the mid-summer classic.
Ashford Fulmer, in his second year in professional baseball out of University of Houston, is among the best in the league. He ranks second in batting average (.330) and fifth in OPS (.874). Fulmer has shown hints of power in addition with his high batting average and solid defense in center field.
Kevin Rivera, a Puerto Rico native, is in his second year in Salem-Keizer. Rivera has hit .317 mid-way through the season and has 10 extra-base hits among his 40 at-bats. Primarily used as a nine-hole hitter, Rivera hit a walk-off single against Everett on July 23.
John Riley, drafted in the 31st round in 2013, is also in his second year with the Volcanoes. Riley is hitting a quiet .342 with 27 hits while not averaging more than 2.7 at-bats per game. Riley hat seven extra-base hits including six doubles and one home run. With an on-base percentage of .441, Riley looks to aid the Northwest League All-Stars with a hint of power and high on-base potential.
Gio Brusa, a switch-hitting outfielder with power from both sides of the plate, was drafted in the sixth round out of University of the Pacific. Brusa is tied for the second most home runs in the league (4) and balances his strength with a high average (.315).
Salem-Keizer sent four representatives to last year's All-Star Game as a part of the league's first matchup with the Pioneer League. The NWL took the win last year in dramatic fashion, winning 6-5 in the tenth inning on August 4.
