Eugene Completes Five-Game Sweep Of Canadians
July 26, 2016 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
Vancouver, B.C. - A slow-roller in the top of the 12th inning off the bat of Eugene 3B Vimael Machin, scored Yeiler Peguero snapping a 6-6 tie. The run would send Vancouver to a sixth straight defeat as the Emeralds topped the Canadians 7-6 to complete a five-game sweep out at historic Scotiabank Field.
The Canadians offense had its moments on Monday night with 2B Deiferson Barreto (3-for-7); RF Jake Anderson (3-for-6); C Javier Hernandez (2-for-6) and SS Yeltsin Gudino (4-for-5) all giving Vancouver a chance to snap the five-game losing streak it had endured dating back to July 20. Even with a five-run lead heading to the 6th inning, Vancouver still looked shaky heading into the final innings of the series finale against the Northwest League's top team.
Shortly after Canadians starter RHP Luis Sanchez departed, having gone 5 1/3 innings of three-hit baseball, the Vancouver bullpen struggled with LHP Evan Smith (1.2IP) and RHP Griffin Glaude (2.0IP, BS) both allowing the Emeralds to get back into the game. Vancouver would lead 5-0 and 6-2 as late as the top of the 7th inning, but Eugene continued to fight back into the game with Glaude blowing a save opportunity.
6-6 was the score heading into the top of the 12th inning and Canadians LHP Nate Abel allowed the game's final run as with runners at first and third base, a soft roller up the third base line stunned both 3B Bryan Lizardo and Abel allowing the run to score from third, sealing the victory.
With the defeat, the Canadians finish the first half of the Northwest League season at 16-22, while Eugene sets a franchise best mark in the first half at 28-10 with the victory.
