Salem-Keizer Falls in Record-Setting Time

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

KEIZER, Oregon - Despite plenty of baseball being played over the last seven days at Volcanoes Stadium, the final game of an eight-game homestand made the fans wait just a little bit longer.

It took a record-time of 4 hours 37 minutes, but the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (17-21) eventually lost to the Everett AquaSox (18-20) in 12 innings by a score of 12-9.

After only mustering one run the previous night, Everett manufactured six through the first nine frames, but exploded for an additional six in the top of the 12th as they also plated a total of 12 batters.

Everett catcher Jason Goldstein doubled to lead off the inning and then pinch hitter Eric Filia sent a chopper back up the middle to score the runner and break the 6-6 tie.

After a single, a sacrifice bunt went horribly wrong for the Volcanoes defense. Third baseman Manuel Geraldo fielded the bunt and threw it down the right field line, allowing Filia to score.

However, the woes continued in the inning as the combination of another error and three bases loaded walks over the next four at-bats produced the final four AquaSox runs.

Salem-Keizer attempted a comeback, but the hole was too deep to climb out of. They mustered three runs in the bottom of the frame, all coming off the bat of centerfielder Bryan Reynolds' double that cleared the bases. He had a game-high four runs batted in on the evening.

There were a total of nine pitchers used by the Volcanoes, with right-hander Jeff Burke getting tagged with the loss. On a lighter note, outfielder Julio Pena made his first professional appearance as a pitcher and got the final out of the top of the 12th, technically registering a 0.00 earned run average.

The SK starting pitcher Matt Krook battled through some inconsistency, allowing two runs - only one earned - while scattering three hits. He only managed three and two thirds innings while throwing 71 pitches.

Offensively, the Volcanoes' rallies came in pairs, scoring twice in the second, fourth and ninth innings. The first two runs came off one swing, with first baseman Ryan Kirby blasting a screaming line drive home run down the right field line. It was his second of the season, with both coming in this series.

The next two runs featured a long ball from right fielder Heath Quinn, landing halfway up the trees beyond the left-center field fence and a one-out broken bat single from catcher John Riley. Quinn's home run was his second in as many nights and his third of the year.

Salem-Keizer's final pair tied the game in the ninth to send it to extras, before they eventually fell. Second baseman Kevin Rivera led off with a walk and then, with one out, Reynolds laced a triple to dead center field, missing a walk-off round tripper by just a few feet.

He came in from a clutch at-bat from left fielder Gio Brusa, who, before singling to tie the game, was 0-for-3 and down to his last strike.

Moving into extra innings, the Volcanoes had their chances; however, they could not overcome leaving a total of four runners on base through the post-regulation frames.

After this eight game home stand, Salem-Keizer will hit the road to take on the Eugene Emeralds in a three game series starting tomorrow, July 26, at 7:05 p.m. The game will be available on Volcanoes Live with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
