Volcanoes Can't Come up with Big Hit in Loss
June 23, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Volcanoes were 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position Monday night, falling to the Canadians 5-3 in front of 2,676 at Volcanoes Stadium.
Salem-Keizer starter Mike Connolly (0-1, 6.35 ERA) was cruising through his first professional start, tossing five scoreless innings while only allowing one hit. He ran into trouble in the sixth, however, loading the bases with nobody out. He nearly escaped the jam, recording two outs without allowing a run, but Lane Thomas ripped a double down the left field line that scored three and put Vancouver out in front. The Canadians weren't done either, as Juan Kelly then shot a single back up the middle that scored Thomas and pushed the Vancouver lead to 4-2.
Connolly had dominated up until that point, retiring the last nine batters he had faced before the sixth inning. The right-hander was making his first professional start after spending the past two seasons as a reliever.
The Canadians' pitching staff allowed nine hits and walked 11 batters, but the Volcanoes couldn't seem to come up with a big hit late in the game. Salem-Keizer loaded the bases in both the seventh and eighth innings and looked poised to at least tie the game, but both rallies fizzled with only a single run crossing the plate.
The Volcanoes relied on some two-out magic early in the contest, scoring single runs in both the third and fifth innings with two outs. Chase Compton, more specifically, got on base with two outs and nobody on in each frame and came around to score both times.
Joey Aquino (1-0, 3.00) picked up the win for Vancouver, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The right-hander was called on with the bases loaded in the fifth inning and managed to escape unscathed. The Canadians bullpen allowed a single run throughout the remainder of the contest, securing the victory. Andrew Case tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save.
Up Next: The Volcanoes begin a three game series at Hillsboro tomorrow. Nick Gonzalez (0-1, 5.79 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. The broadcast will be available on volcanoesbaseball.com or through the TuneIn Radio app. First pitch is set for 7:05.
