Voiro, DeYoung Strong Arm Snappers to 4-0 Win
May 2, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Vince Voiro threw five innings of shutout ball to propel the Beloit Snappers by the Great Lakes Loons 4-0 on Thursday night in Midwest League action at Dow Diamond.
With the victory, the Snappers once again find themselves at .500, as they are now 12-12, and they can steal the series by taking Friday's game. The Loons now have a record of 12-14.
Voiro (1-1) managed to work in and out of trouble all night. After a perfect first inning, he stranded men in scoring position in each of the next four frames. All totaled, he allowed only three hits and one walk in five innings while striking out four.
With their pitcher cruising, Beloit's lineup went to work and they were able to get the necessary runs for the victory. Brett Vertigan put up the game's first run all by himself in the top of the first. He started the game with a walk, stole second, stole third and crossed home on a wild pitch. A Matt Olson single later in the first allowed Rashun Dixon to dent home and put his team ahead by two. In the third, Daniel Robertson continued his impressive play since joining the Snappers by belting a two-run homer to left, his second, and doubling Beloit's lead to 4-0.
Derek DeYoung was charged with holding that lead in the latter frames, as he took over for Voiro in the sixth, and turned out to be every bit as tough on the Great Lakes lineup. He would record the last twelve outs of the game, giving up just two hits and walking two to go along with six strikeouts, including getting Malcolm Holland swinging for game's final out. For his efforts, DeYoung earned his first professional save.
The two teams will fight for the rubber game of this set on Friday night, starting at 6:05pm, CT. The pitching match-up will feature Snappers RHP Austin House (0-2, 2.84 ERA) and Loons RHP Jharel Cotton (1-1, 3.78 ERA).
