"Voice of the Stingrays" Advances To AHL
August 16, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and President Darren Abbott announced today that Director of Broadcasting and Ticket Sales Manager Mike Kelly has accepted a similar position with the American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons.
"We're thrilled that Mike will be moving on to one of the AHL's oldest and proudest franchises," Abbott said. "He has been a consummate professional with the South Carolina Stingrays organization, and we wish him nothing but the best of luck with the Falcons."
Kelly, "The Voice of the Stingrays," joined the organization last June and was selected as Ice Level Television Reporter for the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game in Boise, Idaho following a six-year stint as Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations with the ECHL's Mississippi Sea Wolves. He garnered ECHL Media Relations Director of the Year honors in 2004 and was part of the Radio Broadcast team for the 2003 All-Star Game in Estero, Florida.
"I want to thank the Stingrays organization for a very memorable season," Kelly said. "It was a pleasure to work for the Stingrays Ownership Group and President Darren Abbott. It was also great working with the front office staff, hockey operations staff and local media. In addition, the Stingrays fans and Booster Association were very welcoming to my family and I and we will always cherish our time in South Carolina."
Before Kelly's career in professional hockey began, he spent two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League for the Toronto St. Michael Majors and the Barrie Colts. He was also spent time broadcasting two seasons each with the Brantford Smoke of the Colonial Hockey League and the Orangeville Crushers of the Ontario Hockey Association. Kelly's background also includes four years at The Sports Network in Toronto and one year as a television news anchor/reporter in British Columbia.
A graduate of Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario, Kelly will embark on his 13th year of hockey broadcasting when he joins the Edmonton Oilers new AHL affiliate in Springfield this season.
Kelly is the second member of the Stingrays front office to advance to a higher level this year, as Director of Group Sales Chad Pennington left in late July to join the NHL's Dallas Stars.
