Iowa Cubs News Release

Nashville, TN - Daniel Vogelbach smashed an opposite-field grand slam to help the Iowa Cubs (11-13) to an 8-4 win over the Nashville Sounds (12-14), Wednesday afternoon at First Tennessee Park. It was Vogelbach's first career grand slam and the first for the I-Cubs since Mike Olt on Aug. 5, 2014.

Iowa broke open the ballgame in the sixth inning after trailing 0-1 through the first five frames thanks to a first inning solo home run from Joey Wendle. Albert Almora Jr. singled to lead things off, and Willson Contreras and Taylor Davis drew back-to-back walks to fill the bags with nobody out. Arismendy Alcantara went down on strikes, but Vogelbach was able to cash in as he took a 1-0 pitch from Ryan Brasier over the left field fence. The I-Cubs added one more run in the inning as they hit through the order to run away with a 5-1 lead. The two teams traded runs through the late innings, but Iowa was able to hold on for its second win in as many days.

Righty Jake Buchanan (1-1) tossed 6.0 innings of one-run ball and took his first win of the season as he struck out six and allowed just four hits. Giovanni Soto tried for the save, but walked two and was replaced by Brandon Gomes with two outs in the ninth. Gomes kept the inherited runners from scoring to collect the one-out save.

Contreras reached base five times without an official at-bat as he drew four walks for the second time this season and was also hit by a pitch. Vogelbach went 3-for-5 and tied a career high with five RBI.

Iowa looks for the series win tomorrow against Nashville as the two teams play the final game of this set at 6:35 p.m. Tune in to AM 940 to catch Randy Wehofer on the call or stream online at www.iowacubs.com.
