Vipers week in review

October 31, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Roanoke Valley Vipers (2-3-0, 4 points) made their first road trip of the season over the weekend, playing three different teams in three days. The trip began close to home, as the Vipers traveled to Richmond to face their division rival, the RiverDogs on Friday. Roanoke Valley took a big 2-1 win with them as they boarded the bus to Elmira, NY immediately following the game. The Vipers couldn't keep up with the Jackals Saturday night, and fell by a score of 7-5. Finally, they slithered over to Danbury, CT to face the second-place Trashers. They took a tough 6-2 loss in Danbury before they headed back home to Roanoke Sunday night.

Friday, October 28th at Richmond

Roanoke Valley Vipers 2, Richmond RiverDogs 1

Vipers netminder Jamie Hodson, who was nominated for the second week in a row as the Southern Sports Supply UHL Goaltender of the Week, was nearly spotless in Richmond Friday night, allowing just one goal in the first period to the RiverDogs. Matt Kenny tied the game at one apiece for the Vipers in the third period, scoring his first goal of the season on assists from Petr Jelinek and Vipers captain David Beauregard. Left wing Steve Crusco, put in the game-winner for the Vipers less than a minute after Kenny's goal. Crusco received a nomination for Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week for his efforts over the weekend.

Saturday, October 29th at Elmira

Elmira Jackals 7, Roanoke Valley Vipers 5

The Vipers found themselves down 6-1 to the Jackals just midway through the second period, but the young, resilient team battled all the way back to within one goal, making the score 6-5 at one point. Josh Tataryn and Petr Jelinek both scored a goal during the Vipers rally, and Mark Scott added two. With 39 seconds remaining, Head Coach Jim Wiley pulled Vipers netminder Shawn Conschafter in favor of sending an extra attacker to the ice. The Vipers couldn't maintain control of the puck, however, and Elmira's Sam Paolini sent the puck down the ice to the Vipers' vacant goal for an empty-netter, destroying the Vipers chances of tying the game.

Sunday, October 30th at Danbury

Danbury Trashers 6, Roanoke Valley Vipers 2

The Vipers fell behind the Trashers early, as Danbury scored six straight goals to open up the game. Steve Crusco wiped away Trashers goaltender Sylvain Daigle's shutout midway through the second period, scoring off a pass from D-man Brano Kvetan at the 10:05 mark. Vipers netminder Shawn Conchafter, who replaced starter Jamie Hodson with 5:26 remaining in the first period, was spotless in the net for Roanoke for the remainder of the game. However, the Vipers were only able to convert on one of the 10 power play chances given to them by the physical play of the Trashers, and L.P. Martin's power play goal in the third period was not enough to erase the six goals Danbury put in.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES:

The Vipers will host their cross-state rivals the Richmond RiverDogs for the first time this season for a pair of games Friday and Saturday, November 4th and 5th. Roanoke will then hop on a bus to Danbury for a Sunday night matchup against the Trashers. The Vipers look to improve upon their 1-0-0 record against the RiverDogs so far this season, and will attempt to even the season series with Danbury.
