Edinburg, TX - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, had a double-digit lead in the first half, only to lose it and ultimately fall to Rio Grande Valley, 94-91.
Maine (2-5) was led by Marcus Georges-Hunt, who led all scorers with 28 points on 12-17 shooting. Boston Celtics Two-Way Players P.J. Dozier and Walt Lemon added 19 points each, while Vitto Brown led the bench with 11 points. Rio Grande Valley (5-3) was led by Dakarai Tucker with 24 points, and Bruno Caboclo with 22. The Vipers extend their streak of wins over Maine to 17 games, dating back to 2010.
Georges-Hunt got the scoring started, scoring lay-ups on back-to-back steals to put the Claws up 4. MGH continued the hot shooting with a corner three, scoring 9 early points and giving Maine a 15-7 early lead. Georges-Hunt carried the Claws in the 1st quarter, scoring 11 of Maine's points on 5-7 shooting, while grabbing 4 steals. The Red Claws led 21-15 after 1.
In the 2nd, Nick King, playing in his first game since missing the last two, scored a bucket to put Claw up 7. Maine went on a run, with Dozier driving and scoring to put the Red Claws up 33-22. Maine maintained its lead throughout the half, with the Vipers turning the ball over multiple times. RGV got it to 3, but Georges-Hunt stopped the run with 1:00 to go. At the half, Maine held a 45-43 lead. Georges-Hunt led all scorers with 17 points at the half, while Dozier added 13 for Maine.
The 3rd quarter started slowly, with Maine hanging on to a 1 point lead. Georges-Hunt got to the line to put the Claws up 52-50. Vitto Brown scored 5 straight points to put Maine up 5. Still, the Vipers hung around. Angel Rodriguez's free throws tied the game at 60. Rodriguez drove and scored on the next possession to put RGV up 2. John Bohannon's strong play helped Maine finish out the quarter with 6 quick points - the Red Claws led 75-69 after 3.
In the 4th, Dakarai Tucker drained a three to cut the deficit to 1. Bohannon's follow put Maine back up 77-74. Michael Frazier's tied the game at 77. Bruno Caboclo gave RGV the lead. The Vipers opened the 4th on a 15-3 run, with Caboclo scoring 7 straight to give RGV a 84-78 lead. Lemon stopped the run with a reverse lay-up. Dozier continued strong play offensively, but Tucker's three put the Vipers up 90-87. Down three in the final seconds, Dozier missed an open three that would have tied the game.
Maine shot 48% (36-75) from the field, but just 16% (3-19) from three-point range, while going 16-23 from the free throw line. Rio Grande shot 40% (34-86) from the floor, 37% (15-41) from downtown, and 11-15 from the charity stripe.
