Texas Legends News Release
FRISCO, TX - The Texas Legends (4-4) grabbed a near wire-to-wire win over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (4-3) 108-102 Tuesday night in Frisco.
The visitors took the first lead with an early basket from Brandon Sampson. They held tight until the midway mark in the first when Codi Miller-McIntyre knocked down both attempts from the charity stripe to give the Legends a one-point edge. In the final two minutes, Texas streaked through eight unanswered points to finish the first up 25-16. The Vipers began chipping away at the deficit early in the second before the Legends' starters took over. Rashad Vaughn and Daryl Macon combined for 18 points as the team shot 60% to take their largest lead of the night, up 17.
The Vipers continued to look beyond the arc in the third, hitting six of 13 attempts and sitting at 57% overall while the Legends' efficiency took a downturn to 39%. With five minutes left in the third, RGV found themselves within two, but Keith Hornsby powered out 13 points en route to an 87-73 advantage going into the fourth. The visitors responded to a three pointer from Jameel Warney with 10 straight points to hit the six-minute mark within four points of the Legends. Texas regained the double-digit lead with under two minutes to play and used free throws to fend off the visitors' final efforts.
RGV hit 17-of-52 outside attempts compared to Texas' 8-of-18, but Texas knocked down 28-of-34 from the free throw line to RGV's 13-of-16.
Macon led the Legends' scoring efforts with 28 points, 3 assists while Xavier Johnson had 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Warney tabbed his second straight double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) while grabbing 5 steals and 2 blocks, and Hornsby finished with 20 points off the bench, shooting 3-of-4 from outside.
Sampson finished with 26 points, 7 rebounds to lead the Vipers while Michael Frazier added 18 points, 9 rebounds. Bruno Caboclo had the team's only double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and Angel Rodriguez dished out a game-high 10 assists.
Texas hosts the Maine Red Claws Saturday at 7:30pm before hitting the road for a four-game West coast stretch. For tickets or information call 214-469-0822 or visit www.TexLegends.com.
