HIDALGO, TEXAS - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers held the Albuquerque Thunderbirds to 18 points or less in each of the first three quarters to win 103-79 tonight at Dodge Arena in front of a season-best crowd of 5,350.
The 24-point margin of victory is the largest ever by the Vipers (14-5), who had previously won by 23 twice last season.
The 79 points is also the third lowest total number of points in a single game ever by a Vipers opponent.
The win snaps the Thunderbirds' (9-10) six-game winning streak.
With the game tied 8-8 5:53 into the game, Mike Harris scored eight points as part of a 10-0 Vipers (14-5) run over the next 2:54 to take an 18-8 lead. Harris had 12 points in the first quarter.
The Vipers extended their lead to 48-34 at halftime as Harris scored 20 first-half points and Garrett Temple added 13. Harris finished with 28 points and seven rebounds while Temple finished with 15.
Mickell Gladness had a career-game, setting new highs in points (eight), rebounds (11), blocked shots (four) and assists (two).
Will Conroy scored nine points to go with 11 assists while third-year Vipers Stanley Asumnu and Craig Winder finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Thunderbirds were led by Carlos Powell, who scored 20 points. Former-Vipers Kurt Looby and Kris Collins also did well. Looby finished with 11 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots while Collins scored 13 points.
The Vipers kick off a four-game road trip on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Bismarck Civic Center against the Dakota Wizards.
