Vipers Round Out Training Camp Roster With Eight Draftees

MCALLEN, TEXAS - The NBA Development League Rio Grande Valley Vipers selected Antonio Anderson, Jonathan Wallace, Jamarcus Ellis, Mickell Gladness, Kenny Dawkins, Antoine Hood, Rashad Woods and DeAngelo Alexander in the NBA Development League draft today to round out the training camp roster at 17 players.

A 6-6, 214 pound guard out of Memphis, Anderson graduated in the spring as a member of the 1,000-point club. He's also known for his defense, earning Conference USA All-Defensive Team honors during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. He was also named to the collegeinsider.com All-America Defensive Team during the 2006-07 season and won the Conference USA Tournament MVP in 2008. Anderson averaged 10.2 points, 4.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game as a senior while shooting 45% from the field, including 51.4% from inside the arc.

Wallace is a 6-1, 185 pound sharp-shooter out of Gerogetown (class of 2008) who played professionally in Europe last season with Union Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia-1A) and EWE Baskets Oldenburg (Germany-1.Bundesliga). While in college, Wallace connected on 43.3% of his three-point shots, including 49% (73-149) as a junior, when he averaged a career-high 11.4 points, 3.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game. He also shot a career-high 50.7% from the field and 87.2% from the free throw line while helping to lead the Hoyas to the Final Four, where he scored 19 points, thanks in part to a season-high five three- pointers, against Ohio State.

Ellis played at Indiana University during the 2007-08 season, averaging 6.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 assists and 0.6 blocks per game in 32 contests. The 6-4, 200 pound guard was named the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year after leading Chipola Junior College to a 33-3 record and a second place finish at the national tournament. He was also named a first- team All-American and Florida Community College and Panhandle Conference MVP.

A 6-11, 230 pound center out of Alabama A&M, Gladness averaged 7.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game in 84 contests over the course of three years after transferring from Shelton State Community College. He played for Matrixx Magix Nijmegen (Holland-Eredivise) last season.

Dawkins is a 5-9, 155 pound guard out of Lamar University. After transferring from Arizona Western Junior College, Dawkins was named All-SLC First Team and SLC Newcomer of the Year during the 2007-08 season while averaging 14.6 points, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game to lead the team. He also led the team in minutes per game (34.9) and free throw percentage (.832). As a senior, he averaged 15.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

The 26-year old Hood returns to the NBA Development League after playing for the Colorado 14ers during the 2006-07 season. In 50 games, he averaged 8.0 points 2.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 42.4% from the field. During a four-year career at Air Force prior to that, Hood averaged 10.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.1 steals in 118 games. He shot 36% from behind the arc, including a career-high 40.8% as a sophomore during the 2003-04 season.

A Houston-native, Woods is a 6-5, 235 pound forward out of Kent State, where he became one of the top three-point shooters in the MAC, leading the conference as a junior during the 2007-08 season by hitting 33-of-his 69 shots (47.8%). He previously played for Lee College, going to the seminfinals of the NJCAA Region XIV Tournament.

Alexander is a 6-6, 215 pound guard out of Charlotte who averaged 17.0 and 17.6 points per game as a junior and senior respectively before graduating in 2007. He has played professionally for the Oklahoma City Calvary (Continental Basketball Association), SCU Asesoft Ploiesti (Romania-Div. A, starting five), and EnBW Ludwigsburg (Germany-1.Bundesliga, starting five). Alexander took part in the Orlando Pro Summer League in July with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

They join small forward Stanley Asumnu, center Kurt Looby, small forward Ernest Scott, power forward Marcus Hubbard, power forward Julian Sensley, point guard Cliff Clinkscales, small forward Mike Harris, power forward Garrett Temple and guard Henry Dugat on the Vipers Training Camp roster.

Vipers Training Camp begins on Saturday, November 14.
