Vipers Fall To T-Birds In Round Two Of Road Series

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - The Albuquerque Thunderbirds rallied from a ten point deficit after the first quarter and outscored the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 96-77 over the final three periods to win 123-114 Wednesday night at Tingley Coliseum. The loss ends the Vipers six game win streak and postponed the Vipers quest for their franchise record 22nd season win.

The Vipers started strong in the first quarter by outscoring Albuquerque 37-27 in the first quarter. The Vipers were paced early by their dynamic duo of Mike Harris and Houston Rockets' assignee Jermaine Taylor. Taylor scored 11 and Harris added 10 to help the Vipers earn the double-digit lead after the first frame. As a team the Vipers shot 58% in the first quarter and held the T-birds to just 44% shooting.

In the second quarter the Thunderbirds began their rally. Kris Collins' lay-up with 2:44 remaining in the second gave Albuquerque their first second quarter lead after being down by as many as 12 in the quarter. The Vipers went into the intermission with a two-point lead after they traded buckets with the T-Birds for the rest of the period.

Antoine Agudio's lay-up at the 8:05 mark in the third quarter gave the T-birds their first second half lead, one they did not relinquish at 75-74. The T-birds closed out the quarter on a 13-6 run to take a 96-88 lead into the final quarter. The T-birds led by as many as 14 in the final frame en-route to their third win this season over Rio Grande Valley.

Taylor's 32 points led the way for Rio Grande Valley as he scored over 30 for the second straight day. Harris scored 26 and finished a rebound shy of a double-double. Antonio Anderson scored 17 and dished out seven assists, while Garrett Temple scored 11 points and hauled in six rebounds in the loss for RGV.

Carlos Powell scored 28 with seven boards and six assists to lead the effort for the T-Birds. The guard tandem of Antoine Agudio and Jason Horton scored 23 and 10 points respectively. Albuquerque was fueled by their bench, which outscored the Vipers reserves 52-26. Shane Edwards scored 17 with five boards to lead the T-bird back-ups. Former RGV Vipers guard Kris Collins scored 15 points with six boards and three assists. Kurt Looby, who spent all of last season with RGV scored only eight points, but he had 11 boards and five blocks in the Albuquerque win.

The Vipers and T-birds will finish off their three game series on Friday night when the battle again at Tingley Coliseum. Friday's match- up, the eighth and final of the season between the two clubs will tip- off at 8:00pm.
